Why isn't my Macbook Pro charging?

My Macbook Pro isn't charging even though it's plugged in. There is no little dot of light (either green or yellow) showing on the side. So what's wrong with it? Do I need to get a new charger?

Update:

By the way, how do you take the battery out? Sorry, im new at this.

If you can turn the macbook pro on, go to the battery indicator on the top apple bar, and hold the OPTION key and check your battery status. it should say:

    Battery conditions

The battery condition tells you whether your battery is functioning normally and approximately how much charge it can hold.

    Here are the possible conditions:

Normal: The battery is functioning normally.

Replace Soon: The battery is functioning normally but holds less charge than it did when it was new.

Replace Now: The battery is functioning normally but holds significantly less charge than it did when it was new. You can continue to use the battery until you replace it without harming your computer.

Service Battery: The battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Have your computer checked by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer.

You cannot buy a unibody macbook pro battery off the streets. You must get it serviced at an apple store or send it into the apple servicing center. The Battery is secured by a little hinge and a spring but first you must removed the 8 screws of the computer undercarriage.

NOTE: YOUR BATTERY INDICATOR LIGHT JUST MIGHT BE BROKEN.

The magnetic tip of your charger is screwed. You gotta change the wire thats coming out of the adapter from another adapter that isn't working and has problem on the main charger unit(not wire) or simply get a replacement if its under warranty. Since your school owns it just give it to them and let them handle the situation themselves. May be you gotta change the fuse if your Volex extension cord of your MagSafe charger is fused.

no I thought I had the same proble when I first got my laptop....but I powered if off....took out the battery and put it back in and then charged it and it worked correctly....I guess sometimes when moving a laptop around the battery latches can somehow push it out just slightly and not align it correctly to charge...so you simply need to check this and take it out and put it back in to make sure it's nothing bigger of a problem!

its the power converter if you do not see the light. Make sure the ends of the converter are not broken an or covered by anything pasty. Test a second battery pack just in cast its the battery not holding the charge.

You probably need a new charger.
