Why are these programs running when i'm doing nothing?

There are tons of programs running when i'm not doing anything. Please tell me how to stop this!?

I just checked my computer's CPU usage while all my programs were closed, and it's running a ton of "services" and the CPU is being used like crazy! No wonder my computer is so slow! How did this happen and how can I make my computer's CPU not run so high when i'm doing absolutely nothing?

p.s. i just uninstalled a ton of programs so i don't think the programs that showed up on my uninstall list are the problem.

Additional Details

Here are a few examples of the programs that are running now:

The problem is, you're running Windows Vista. No, I'm not trying to be funny or goofy, I'm being honest.

Vista has been, is, and always will be, a resource hog. Vista should be looked upon as nothing more than a terribly failed experiment.

Vista requires a very fast processor and plenty of memory to fully function with any real response time or reliability. 2 GB of ram isn't fast enough for 64 bit computing under Vista. You really should have 4 or more with 64 bit.

One of the main problems with Vista is what you're currently dealing with. Vista runs a lot of programs in the background that are constantly doing something, regardless of whether or not you need them to. Such as Disk Defragmenter. Both Vista and 7 run their defragmenter programs in the background, on a constant basis, so you don't don't have to. It's supposed to be for convenience and ease of use, but it's actually a problem. It uses resources and fails to teach new users how to operate, clean, and maintain their computers.

Every computer owner should know the basics of doing such things. Your computer will run faster, more reliably, and for much longer.

If you have the option to do so, I would recommend downgrading to XP with Service Pack 3, or upgrading to 7. 7 has the eye popping details of Vista, with the stability and reliability of XP. I can't recommend it enough, honestly.

Oh, and uninstalling programs doesn't always help. There will always be traces of left over files, folders, registry entries, etc. One or two don't matter, but usually there are many, many more that you'll never see, and they do eat up resources and make the computer work harder when it doesn't have to.

Oh, and some of the programs you mentioned in the list? Some of them are important. They will need to run, for Windows to operate fully. But a great many of them are absolutely worthless.

They're all draining your system. I highly recommend, at the very least, that you get another 2 GB of memory. 64 bit Vista definitely needs it to function reasonably.

We could run through them all, but they all look like legitimate system services. Which ones are using up the CPU? Lets focus on those.

Most of them are pretty self-descriptive. For example:

'spooler': Sends things being printed to printers.

    'rasman': Manages remote access connection2.

'stisvc': Manages activation of camera devices

    'tapisrv': Manages telephone services

'sens': Adds events to the system log

'schedule': Runs events at future times

    'w32time': Synchronizes the system clock

'wlansvc': Manages tasks required to stay attached to a wireless network

'ssdpsrv': Part of UPnP to manage network location awareness

    'wuauserv': Watches for windows updates

'wudfsvc': Connects user-mode drivers to kernel-mode stubs

And so on. These are all common services that generally do nothing until and unless they are needed. If they are using significant CPU, then that's a problem. Are they? If so, which ones?

Oh those things will always run on your computer, you can stop them MOST of them from running but then they will start up again if you restart your computer. If you want to get rid of them temporarily, go to task manager by clicking CTRL + ALT + DEL and then it should show the list of processes on your computer, then right click and press end process, but don't delete internet process because that will take off your internet tab.

Most of them are junk programs that install when you install other programs and they start up with your computer.

go to start > run. Type "msconfig" w/o quotes. Go to the startup tab and disable all, go to the services tab and check hide all microsoft services, then disable all of the non microsoft services. Restart computer.

Re enable things on the startup tab that you know you need, but you really don't need any of them.

    heya love :)

you must have alot of unused services on startup causing alot of processes in the background which will dramticly decrease performnace

    try these steps:

    start

    run

    msconfig32

    services tab

    and disable unused services

    restart to save changes.

it could also be a virus depending on how much resources is being used. when on the processes on task mgr order the processess in order of memory usage if one is extreemly high e.g. 100000k then smthing is rong

have you heard of your operating system?

Most of those processes are your OS.

also, if you have a laptop, most of the others are running because it is a laptop with hardware that works using special services.
