In Boston are there many insects?

If so, are there more at certain times of year? Are they in greater numbers when the weather is humid, and if so, when is it humid? From pictures it looks like there are waterways. Are the bugs more concentrated around the water?

Thank you.

There can be cockroaches pretty much everywhere in the city all the time, even in fancy million+ buildings. Mostly in basement and "parlor-level" buildings or near restaurants. Most buildings spray for them up to about the 6th floor. (I was at a party once and one ran by. Oh, it's just a Japanese Beetle, the hostess said. Wrong.)

Mosquitoes are around this time of year at dusk, particularly in the Fens and Riverway parks. Many suburban communities spray for them. There are also sand flies and ticks at beaches and deer ticks in brush.

There are also tree beetles killing various trees, butterflies and moths, flies, bees, hornets, the usual urban bugs. Yellow jackets lose their queens and go NUTS in late September. I've seen ladybugs in my garden.

But no black flies or deer flies that I've seen.

Not as much as you would think . . . In the city, even near the Charles and the harbor, there isn't much of a problem. When you get out into the subburbs, then mosquitoes can be a bit of a problem.

If you take a small boat (cannoe/kayak) to some remote parts of the waterways, you might run into some mosquitoe issues.

As far as humidity ... June-August I'd say . . . and the worst of it is pretty much over this year (hopefully). You never know with Boston weather.

Boston has way LESS insects than the upper midwest (Iowa, Minnesota, the Dakotas).

The reason why...bugs do not thrive in moving water. Boston's oceans and rivers are constantly moving. In the midwest, there are lots of lakes and standing water where bug eggs thrive.

from around may to august, there are a lot of mosquitoes, especially if it's near an area where there are stagnant water.

you don't see that many insects flying around. i have some tomatoes and pepper plants on my patio, and i only have 1 visitor: a bumblebee. that probably explains why i don't have too many veggies: not enough insects to help pollinate the plants.

No outdoor bugs at all during the colder months. In warm months the seaside where there are salt marshes have lots of mosquitoes.
