Why do people say, "You can't have your cake and eat it too"?

Why would someone get cake if they can't eat it? :D

    It means that you can't have both things in life. You have to chose, one or the other. Do you have a cake, and keep it, or do you eat it and it's gone? It's a form of speech but it basically means that in life, nothing is straight forward. You need to make life changing decisions.
