I have never had a problem.. I am a student and open my Word documents typed up on my Mac at home on the college Windows computers all the time. You just have to purchase Office for Macs.

If you save it in Word on a PC and open it on a MAC it shouldn't matter, it's the version of word your using, newer versions can always read older versions, older versions need an update to read newer ones. If you have an newer version you can always save it as an older version (file/save as/change to older Word format)

Download a trial of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac from here:

This is the official easiest way to do it, of course the trial runs out on 30 days, so you would need to buy it.

You could save as .doc, .docx, if a mac owner has Office for Mac or iWork. Otherwise you could save as .rtf or .pdf

Multiple applications can open it (eg: OpenOffice), but the easiest by far is to drag and drop it to TextEdit.
