Am I the only young white American female in Mexico City?!?

I recently moved to Mexico city from America. Im 24, blonde hair, green eyes, also dont speak much Spanish! I stick out like a sore thumb. I find it impossible to make friends here. I feel like im the only one like me here! My question is, is there anyone out there like me or can at least speak to me? Ive been here 5 months and very bored! Is there a site I can go to where I can find others? Please, no rude comments!

Your statements brought back some memories when I first got here. Blonde hair , BLUE eyes and 6 foot tall ( I stand above every Mexican ) . I too tried to blend in - I wanted to experience life EXACTLY like a Mexican . Boy , was I stupid - I stand out like a sore thumb !

    Now ( 4 years later ) , I simply live life.

Learn Spanish - I use a Spanish / english dictionary when I saw a common word over and over. I also wrote down common words ( this , that , every , friend , some , etc. , etc. ) on a piece of notebook paper and learned a whole sheet by the end of the week and then repeated. Did not take long. Have fun with it ! Have a local pronounce the word and you write it down phonetically. Start with the alphabet - a , e and others are NOT pronounce like in english - very important first step ! Learn numbers as well. I used to buy just 1 beer and put out the money. Count the change and then I knew what that cost. THEN I would order 3 more - They would look at me like I was crazy !!!:):) I did it for a reason they were unaware about :):)

GET OUT MORE - explore the city and everything it has to offer. Find a local street restaurant and visit often. Go find a local bar - visit often. People will approach you as they see you are a local. They seem to flock to me as it is a status symbol for Mexicans to speak english and have a gringo friend. They WANT to practice english. I find most of my conversations are spanish on my end and response from them in English - it's funny sometimes.

Doing what your doing shows me you are adventurous , outgoing , risk taker - not everybody can do it - Mexico is harsh :)

Get out more and open up , explore , TRY Spanish and laugh with them when you don't pronounce it right - trust me I've had some funny " language " stories .

Ask questions when conversation lags - shows interest and you learn their way of looking at life.

How you are bored in the largest city in the world is beyond me. Get out of your comfort zone and have fun !!!! You have the skills - Do it !!!!

Take pictures of your adventures and send to your American friends - FACEBOOK !!!! This should make you a little less bored and more connected to your life in America.

Good luck - and , NO your not alone - just a different personality than most.

Here is just one link I found for you. Google - American ex pats Mexico city. Ex pats are people like us !

I just went and saw you are " Visiting " Mexico ? I imagine you are here an a 6 month tourist visa ? Don't forget that - you MUST leave after six months then return again on a new tourist visa. They do not play on this !!! If you stay longer ,there is a fine that must be paid before you leave Mexico. Don't lose that tourist card they gave you when you went thru immigration - they will ask for it when you leave !

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) is the capital of Mexico and an unbelievable town surrounded by great hill ranges. To see that city you are able to select the best solution hotelbye . The city's place is certainly breathtaking. Two spectacular snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower above it using their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also preserves numerous pointers of its past and these are items that attract the tourists. The beating center of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where in actuality the country's first constitution was proclaimed in 1813 and now could be one of the most visited host to Mexico City since it's among the world's greatest squares. In Mexico City you can also visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

Also....sign up fr some Spanish classes...you will meet people there . And you need to make Mexican friends too! Friends do not need to be just like you...far better if they are not. Speak what little Spanish you can and people will help you out with it and that's how you learn. If you only hang out with people just like yourself, what is the point in being in Mexico City? I know Americans that live in Mexico who only hang out with other Americans. They are missing so much. Make friends with Mexicans, even if your Spanish is not very good...and there are people from many other countries there too...you can meet so many very interesting people.
