What kind of caterpillar?

Found this little guy on our weeping willow tree. He's about a half an inch long. We live in Maine. Anyone know what kind of caterpillar it is?

Very cool caterpillar. It is the Spiny Oak-Slug, Euclea delphinii. It has many larval foodplants, including willow. Wagner says that the sting (urticating hairs) is mild compared to other slug caterpillars even though they have more spines than most.

This page shows both caterpillars and adults:

What type of hedge or shrub? Based to your description, it feels such as you would have oleander caterpillar. These are poisonous, so birds would possibly not devour them, that's why they are this variety of challenge. It is difficult to say for certain without deciding what the shrub is and actually seeing the caterpillars. If there do not appear to be too many, easily prefer them off and squish them. That is the excellent variety of control, plus you do not appear to be utilizing chemical materials.
