Could a non-preditor be an intelligent animal?
You don't have to out fox grass to eat it.
Preditors, on the other hand, need to study and learn
in order to take down an animal that has avoidance instincts.
If for example humans had not been preditors,
but were vegitarians instead,
would they have evolved the same intelligence.
Raccoons are predictors. they eat rodents, chickens ducks, turkeys. they are omnivores like humans.

There are plenty of intelligent herbivores. Elephants, for example, are extremely intelligent. Horses are intelligent, too - look at all the things we've trained them to do over the centuries.

Yes.
Raccoons are supposed to be the most intelligent animals and they aren't predators, they're scavengers. Raccoons have been shown to be the best problem-solving animals, they can break into anything that isn't padlocked, including combination locks.
That's why they're such a pest when they dig into your garbage. They can remember solution to problems for over 3 years. And display moderately complex thought often.
