Expanders? Experience?

I took my son 8 year old son to the orthodontist today. It is being recommended that he get expanders because his mouth is small and will be extremely crowded with his adult teeth coming in in. It is already causing problems with only 5 adult teeth, the third to come in on the bottom, is severely pushing the front tooth next to if forward, badly.

My question is for any parents that have children around his age that have, or have had expanders. Mainly, what has been the experience overall? Especially discomfort and pain. I really just want to know if it is worth doing.

Anything the dentist or orthodontist suggests to a kid or teen is worth it, whether it's painful or uncomfortable they will be thankful in 20 years when they have beautiful perfect teeth!

By expander, I am assuming you mean pallet expander. It is a simple little device that goes onto the roof of the mouth and attaches to four teeth to stay in. Over the 5ish months he has it you will turn it by using a small key, you just put the key in the hole and turn to expand his mouth. I warn you, this is painful. The first week (or longer) he will be waking up feeling a lot of pain. But keep in mind, it's only 5 months, and that is not long at all. My brother had one and he hated it, but no he has perfect teeth and a perfect mouth. So he will complain, and he will most likely hate it. But your the parent, and you want the best for him^.^

Just remember to keep some sort of pain reliever around for his pain:)
