Did Jesus die for the sins of the elect only or for the sins of all humanity (past, present, and future)?

Why is this important to me? It affects how I preach the gospel. Should I tell my audience "Jesus died for you?"

I believe that Jesus died to secure the salvation of the elect only. He died for His sheep, not the goats. In his prayer in John 17 on the eve of his crucifixion, he said he was not praying for the world, "I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours" (John 17:6-9, ESV)

Why would Jesus die for people he refused to pray for?

To those of you who hold to the "Limited Atonement" position, how do you present the death of Christ to your hearers if you do not say, "Christ died for you."

I will let the voters decide who will get the Best Answer "award" since you already know where I stand on this issue.

Please provide Scriptural support for your response. Thanks!

Update:

Thank all of you for taking the time to answer my question. I see that my beliefs concerning this question represent the minority position, by far!

Whilst it is true Jesus died to redeem people from every tribe, tongue and nation (Revelation 5:9), it is not true that everybody will be redeemed. Jesus died to save “his people” from their sins (Matthew 1:21); he laid down his life for “the sheep” (John 10:15), who are the people “chosen by God from before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4). They were given to Jesus by the Father and Jesus will not lose any of them – they will all be raised up in the last day (John 6:37-40). Jesus was stricken for the transgressions of “God’s people.” He would “justify many” because he bore their iniquities and he bore the sin of “many” (Isaiah 53:8-12).

Who are the elect, for whom Jesus laid down his life? God made Christ to be sin on our behalf so we might become the righteousness of God in him (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is a real salvation – not merely the possibility of salvation. All for whom Christ died will be saved. It is a reality – it was finished on the cross (John 19:30). The debt has been paid in full (Colossians 2:13-14). If this were not so, then the atoning work of Christ becomes nothing more than a possibility that relies upon man to do something – to add to it – to make it a reality. Jesus died to secure forever the salvation of those the Father has given to him (Hebrews 7:25).

The gospel call (to salvation) is universal in the sense that anyone who hears and believes will be saved. But not all will believe! There is no biblical basis for universal salvation. The gospel is to be preached to everyone because it is the power of God to salvation for all who believe and is the means that God has ordained by which the elect will be saved (Romans 1:16; 10:14-17).

I say that Jesus died so that whoever believes on him will have eternal life - from there the Bible can be used to show why some will believe and why some will not.

That's a very interesting question. God so loved the WORLD. Okay, if that verse is taken alone, then God allowed Jesus to die for everyone. There is no eternal punishment, right? If Jesus atonement covered everyone then everyone is going to Heaven.

Is that a true statement? Given the knowledge of the rest of the Bible. We know there is an eternal punishment. If you believe in it or not. There will be some sort of eternal separation from God. Some believe Hell, some believe they will be evaporated or some such. God says there will be a Judgement Day. If there is no consequence to our sinful life, then why are we trying to be obedient to ANY law. Revelation... After all it begs the question, What did God save us FROM?

So if there is judgement, then there will have to be punishment. Are we to assume that no one will be punished? Then why would God mention a Judgement Day? The casting out of sinners, why are they cast out if God gave everyone eternal life?

The obvious answer is their sin is not covered by Jesus. So what does God mean when He says He loved the World?

I would have to venture the only logical explanation is that since there is a Judgement and therefore some of the world will be punished. This could only mean that Jesus death on the Cross, It has the potential to pay for all the sins of the world.

What does that mean though when you quoted that Jesus prayed for those that He said God gave Him? Romans 10:17 tells us that Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

So everyone who hears the word of Christ will have Faith? Is that true? So every time someone listens to Billy Graham on T.V. and hear the word of Christ. They come to Faith? Saving Faith?

Anyone who has gone out to share the gospel with others, KNOWS that's a misinterpretation of Scripture. We are dead spiritually in sin, right? Why else would we need to be BORN AGAIN, spiritually? John 3:5-21

So you have to be Born of the Spirit... So how does a dead man hear or see? They can't, right? So the Holy Spirit must come into you in order to breathe life into you spiritually. To be BORN again.

So with that line of reasoning, would the next logical step be that it is the work of the Spirit? So if it is the work the Spirit, does the Spirit do His own will? Wait didn't God send the Spirit? John 14:16-31...

That would lead me to believe that God is in control of whom the Spirit goes to also. So I would have to logically take it to mean God calls those that He means to be Born Again.

So if God gives them the Spirit to be Born Again. Then John 17 must mean when Jesus says, "You gave them to Me." "They are Yours". God chooses those whom He wills to be Born Again.

Very interesting question. You don't have to agree. You may not have eyes to see or ears to hear. Not being arrogant, just telling it like it is.

No where in Scripture does it say that Jesus only came for the 'elect'. We become the 'elect' when we accept God's free gift of redemption by accepting it. Your argument makes 'for a better than thou' attitude that I found extremely annoying before I found Jesus.

Remember, Jesus said "I came to seek and to find those that are lost..." He also said, "The Son of Man did not come to judge but to save..." I am sure you know these BiBle verses yourself, so I do not need to put them down for you.

Stop your arrogant attitude, you present yourself like the Pharisees (that Jesus detested) All show 'and do as I say, but not as I do'.

We as Christians are supposed to be ambassadors for Christ, your position sounds smug and pride-full. Remember that Jesus also said, "All have sinned, lest any man boast".

According to John 3:16 which says for God so Loved The world that He sent His only Begotten son that Whosoever believes In Him shall Not Perish But have everlasting Life ,If You look at this verse carefully It tells Us that Jesus Died for the whole world ,not for a particular race, social class, skin Color

, or for a particular group of People but for the whole world

If You also Look at Mattew 28 :19 It says go yea therefore and teach all nations ,Baptizing them In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy ghost. So Its also telling Us to g into all nations ,which means that he died for every one not only the elect . Thank You Lord for taking My sins

He died for **the sake** of ALL. The trick is that all will not take advantage of his sacrifice!!!

It's sort of like the recent government rebate on HDTV converter boxes. The government enacted a bill that provided a $40 discount coupon on converter boxes for **every single residence in the U.S.**. However, to *get* that $40 coupon, you had to do several things, including fill out an application before the deadline.

Naturally, anyone who did not fill out and submit the application did not receive a coupon. Also naturally, anyone who received a coupon but who did not use it to buy a converter box did not receive the $40 discount.

So: like with salvation, the coupon was available to all. Like salvation, the benefits of the coupon were received only by those who met the requirements - i.e. those who followed the instructions.

You should know and preach the TRUTH. The truth is He died for all of us, Romans 5:6-8, Romans 3:22 & 23, Romans 1:16, Acts 2:39

Jesus died for All but, only a remnant will fully trust and believe In Jesus. 2 Peter 3:9 " The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

    John 3:16-18 !

Nothing less and nothing more. I am now going to invert verse 16. Some people need the inversion to be able to understand what is said:

Inverted part of 16: . . . that whomsoever does not believe in him shall perish and shall never have everlasting life!!!

Do you get it? Read 16 and 18:

    John 3

16 For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him. 18 He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God

So for whom did Jesus die, for those who shall put faith in him. Those who never had the chance to know him, will if they aren't wicked be given the resurrection of the unrighteous so that they may if they choose wisely do 16 and if they choose unwisely 18.
