To be an elementary school teacher...what should I major in?
I am going to be starting school in a week at Rutgers New Brunswick. I can't major in education, but they have a 5 year master's program for education. To be a secondary school teacher, they say to major in the area you want to teach. For early childhood/elementary education it just says to major in a liberal arts area.
What majors look best? I'm sure psychology, english, math, biology, or maybe spanish would all be good majors. But what about majors that don't directly relate to elem ed like anthropology or something? Would that look bad? If I get the masters in elem ed does my B.A. really matter that much?

If you want to focus in elementary you can major in anything you want. I have colleagues that have Bio Sci, Communication, General degree. I majored in Sociology with a minor in Social Work. I know individuals that did a major in dance. Continue this an opportunity to learn anything you are interested in. Enjoy it before you are required to take specific courses related to education.

First off if you already have a bachelors degree, then I would say look into a MAT (Masters of Art in Teaching) program. This program is designed for individuals who want to teach, but did not major in education during undergraduate. That five year program is too long. To get a masters degree take about 1 1/2 to two years depending on the individual.
If you do not have a bachelors degree I would suggest that you go to a college where they have an elementary education program. I said this because that way you will have some courses that would prepare you for the career and also you will have to student teaching which will help you gain insights on what it is really like to be in the classroom.
I have been teaching for over 8 years and I went through a MAT program , and took praxis content area in elementary education. This allows me to teach grades 4-8 in the state I live.
Good Luck! This is a great career choice!

I doubt a primary in Theatre Arts for fundamental tuition could aid. You want the fundamentals like English, Science, or Math, to coach any stage (each top tuition and fundamental tuition.) Perhaps you'll take a look at majoring in Theatre Arts and minoring in a fundamental discipline.
