you make money from youtube when your videos are very popular. By having several highly rated and watched videos, youtube can make a large profit by placing ads around your videos. There are several video creators on youtube that make great videos and make great money (i.e. dude perfect)

i think youtube pays their "partners" (popular youtubers) for the hits on their videos
someone revealed the formula but it was a while back and i didnt care enough to remember lol
