I dont have any advice on books, sorry

But I can tell you from experience that the rule is "Never buy a dog when you havent met his/her parents".

I made this mistake and bought my dog from a local pet shop because I fell in love with him.

I've had nothing but problems and googling into 'puppy mill' dogs, everything makes sense. He's anxious, clingy - clearly not a good start to life and he has behavioral problems and its a long story but he's here and he's happy. Very long story!!
