How can I tell if a garment is colorfast?

I have a bright red polo-type shirt that I have washed once, by itself. How do I know if it is safe now to wash it with other things, and that the color will not run?

    You don't for sure. I would wash it again by itself and examine the water to see if there is any red dye in the water.
