Can Christians eat shrimp?
The Bible clearly says not to eat shrimp: "Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales. But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean. "--Deuteronomy 14:9-10
I know a whole bunch of Christians who eat shrimp, though, and they say it's because they aren't bound by Judaic Law, but Jesus seemed to think otherwise when he said: "I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."--Matthew 5:18
So if Jesus said that the law was still in effect, and the law says not to eat shrimp, why do so many Christians think it's okay?
@ FROG E: Where does it say that Jesus isn't talking about dietary laws?
He said that not the smallest stroke of a pen would disappear, yet you say that a rather major stroke of the pen isn't included. Please cite your verse for reference.

@Cate: but what you're saying is that eating shrimp is a sin, but you're forgiven for it. Shouldn't you not do it if it's prohibited, even if you're forgiven? By this logic, wouldn't murder also be okay, since you'd be forgiven for it?
@Cate: Sorry, missed your subtext there in the edits. Okay, ask that question of the people who think it's okay. :)
@krazyabouthim: It;a nice to see a god depicted who isn't just a Draconian hall monitor, but I still have trouble reconciling the god in the verse you posted with Jesus' words I posted.
@Scribe55: your verse gets to the heart of my question. Jesus said that the law would not pass away, yet the author of Acts (some say Luke, some say otherwise) clearly contradicts this. Why is this person's word taken over the word of Jesus? I just don't get it.

Yes, Christians can eat shrimp or any other shell fish....those laws were written for the Jews.
Matt 5:18 is not talking about Jewish dietary laws.

Acts 10:9-16 (New International Version)
Peter's Vision
9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."
14"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."
15The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."
16This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

Those were the dietary laws given to the Jews, not the Gentiles.
The dietary laws do not apply to anyone any more.
Acts 21:25 (KJV)
As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication.

I wonder why more Christians and Jews don't eat grasshoppers when the Book of Leviticus clearly says they are permissible for food.
I think it was Paul who started abrogating the Jewish laws because he wanted to attract converts to Christianity from outside of the Jewish community.

The Christians tend to ignore the versus they don't like in the OT. But they still have to follow it, all of it. But some of them don't apply anymore, except that they all do. It's very easy you see, very easy to understand.

Not if they follow their bible.
EDIT - @ OP, sorry, should have been clearer, I was quoting someone else. I don't believe in the bible myself but do believe that those who shove it down everyone's throats should at least follow its teachings to the letter.
Source(s): EDIT "He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross" ^ Isn't that selectively applied! "Those laws were written for the Jews" eh? So God applies different standards to different people? Give me a break, it's in the Christian bible. - 6 years ago
That is written in the Old Testament, when Jesus died for our sins that was made void so to speak, also, what God commanded in the Old Testament.

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature,
God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the
written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us;
he took it away, nailing it to the cross.
