old hp Compaq dx5150 overheats and shuts down?
I know why it shuts down, it's because it has no intake or exhaust fan.in fact the only fan type thing it has is the heat sink.I want to know how I could go about installing a fan in the computer because before it shuts down it runs great I just want to be able to stay on it for a longer amount of time which I can't do now because after like an hour it shuts down.I just recently got it from someone who didn't want it. for $30 bucks.Since it has a gig of ram 40 gig hard drive a dvd drive came with keyboard, mouse, and monitor I know I got more than what I paid for,I just really want it to work.
I prefer if the answer is specific to the model in the title dx5150.looks like this but without the fan.

Well, I took a look at the photo you attached and I don't see a fan, except for fan in the power supply. I have several HP DC7600 computers (I sell them to my business clients and keep a few on hand). There is no place to mount a fan on these units... at least none that I can see.
Ok, why is it overheating? If you brought this system to me I would first blow all of the dust out of the computer, starting with blowing the dust out of the power supply and then then cpu heatsink/fan. Make sure you get all of the dust out.
The next area to deal with is the cpu thermal grease (if the dust removal doesn't work). Pull the heatsink off of the cpu and replace the thermal grease.
Still turns off....? Ok, do this one second, test the power supply. You may have to take the computer to a small local shop that has a 'power supply tester' and verify that the voltages are correct. I mention this because I have a computer on my workbench at the moment with that specific problem. It's not overheating, it just shuts down after an hour or two. I checked the 12V rail with my tester and it showed 11.3 Volts so I replaced it with another power supply which shows 11.8 on my tester. After running the program 'HOGCPU' for 1 1/2 hours with no shutdowns, I suspect that was the problem.
By the way, you could have a motherboard going bad... lets hope not!
Hope this helps.

Case fans are very cheap 10-30 dollars and are available at almost any computer shop. They are easy to install.
1. Mount the fan using the provided screws (Ensure that the fan blows air out of the case)
2. Plug in the fan to the provided slot on your motherboard (All mobos typically have at least one fan slot)
Most ATX cases use 80mm fans.
