Took a Stray to the pound.....am I horrible?

Hi everyone,

On Saturday night a dog ran up into my driveway when my husband and I were unloading groceries. She was a beautifull little pit bull and was so hot and thirsty (I live in AZ) so I let her come inside for the night because it was too late to do anything. I looked around the neighborhood, posted her photo on Pets911 and craigslist. I introduced her to my animals, which did not go well and decided I could not keep her. The Humane Society would not take her because she is not injured, the rescues in my area are not taking surrendered animals, only animals from shelters. I tried to give her to a friend, but she did not get along with her dog either. So yesterday evening I took her to the pound. I cannot stop crying....she is young, only about a year, but I feel like I signed her death warrant and like I should have done something else. Am I a bad person for taking her to the pound?

Update:

Thanks guys......I still feel really bad, but at least I feel like I did the right thing. I do feel like I could have tried harder to socialize her with my existing pets, but I'm going to be out of town for 2 weeks in about 5 days and am not comfortable with leaving a new dog in the home with a sitter in that amount of time. I think I will call some rescues and inform them of her predicament. Again, thanks for making me feel a little better.

    You did the right thing.

If the dog was left to wander, she could have been hit by a car, suffered heatstroke, etc. She had to go somewhere she would be safe and was cared for.

Young dogs tend to be adopted out. At a year old, she's got a pretty good shot of being homed.

If you feel like you want to do more, you could add to your signs that the dog is now at X facility. Or you could call a pit rescue group and let them know she is there, as they may take her if she isn't adopted out before the wait time expires. If your town has a forum or blog, you could post about her there as well( that got a dog I found and had to take to the shelter back home once! A neighbor recognized the description and alerted the owner. Dog was home in 24 hours!)

But honestly, you did what you could to keep her safe and help her owners (if she has any) to find her.

I know shelters etc aren't very accepting of pits, shepards, etc but since she was young and from the sounds of it good-tempered towards people they may be more lenient. I know how horrible that "industry" is towards the animals they take in but the only reason they aren't out of business is the same reason you had to take her. You can only do so much! It really does sound like to tried all the other options available to you, and sometimes you've just gotta do what you have to. No matter what way you look at it she HAS to be better off there than out in the heat or along a highway somewhere without anyone taking care of her.

Not at all; you did the best you could, and it is very likely that she will be adopted anyways (as younger dogs usually are). However, this does point out a large failing in the animal welfare system (i.e., that your only option for getting this animal into care was to bring it to the pound); perhaps if irresponsible people would stop overburdening it with their BYB and "un-fixed" animals, then it would no longer be an issue....

(Sorry - that last part had nothing to do with you or your question; I just needed to "vent". I'm finished now ;) ).

You absolutely did the right thing. You can't take in every stray dog who needs a home, or you just become a hoarder! You tried hard to find a good home for her, but it was beyond your resources to find one. So at that point you have to find an organization with more resources who will take her. It's tough to take a dog to the pound, but there really wasn't anything else you could do. You did much more for her than anyone else had done.

No, you tried almost everything you could, I appreciate you actually tried to help the dog! Why not donate a old blanket or dog bed to the pound to help the other dogs there. Most people would not do anything to help a stray animal... so in this case, you are not horrible.

No! Of course not! You did the right thing, you tried looking for a new home for her, but she just didn't co-operated with the other dogs. Trust me, you're a lot more responsible than many existing dog owners. Kudos to you! :)

No...you would have been a horrible person to let her back on the streets where she could get hit by a car or picked up by an animal abuser. You did all you could, you tried to take her in but she couldn't deal with your existing animals. What else could you have done? Please don't be down on yourself, you did all you could.

    You did the right thing.

Perhaps she has a microchip or her owner is looking for her and they will be reunited.

If not, with her aggression towards your friends dog, it is best that she be PTS if the owner does not claim her, so she does not harm someone elses animal.

As I said, you did the right thing. The dog is safe, and not a menace to the public.

You did more than many people would have, so no, you are not horrible.

Its unfortunate that the dog did not get along with yours or your friends animals, but there it is....you didnt have much of a choice.
