Dog lovers who have kids?

I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and am currently 18 weeks pregnant. I had a dog for 6 years and recently had to give him up. He was very aggressive with my children and didn't like any kids really at all. He did end up biting my 3 year old not really bad however; it did draw blood. So after searching long and hard for a good place for him i found a rescue group that was for his breed and they found a foster home to take him in until he could find a permanent home. I just didn't want to see him end up in a shelter or put to sleep so I made sure to find the right place. i just feel like I need someone to tell me I did the right thing. I miss him so much and just feel really bad about giving him up even in these circumstances really. Do you think I did the right thing? Would you have done the same? Thanks!

Update:

We actually do have another family dog that does great with the children. I would not be able to not have a dog in my house.

you did the right thing and more ... you ensured the dog went to a rescue and foster and not just dumped at the spca ... and it was the only thing to do considering he bit your child ... you have nothing to feel bad about and go give your 3 year old a hug for doing right by him/her :O)

I do think you did the right thing. I have a five year old stepdaughter that loves dogs..maybe too much and irritates them. My little dog does well with her, but she isn't allowed to play with the other dogs while visiting my parents. I do not want to put her in harms way, nor do I want the dog to be in trouble when he doesn't understand what a child is. I love my dog Belle tremendously, but if Belle could not behave around her she would go to someone else in the family. So you did do the right thing, and when your children grow up look into getting a family dog together that they can grow up with. As of right now it sounds like you have enough of a handful ;) Good Luck, Take Care.

Aww got your story made me cry!!

I'm In the same situation,I have to get rid of my 2 chihuahuas of 4 years. Not exactly for you same situation, but they did bite my 1 year old baby, but still kept them after that, because I realized it wasn't their fault,it's was mine for letting her play with them after knowing how they're.Anyways the reason I'm getting rid of them is because I got kick out of my place because the owners sol the property.Im having such a hard time to find them a good safe home. But today I got great news from a place where they rescue them a placed them in a good home and making sure they adopt them together! I was so close to give them to this people who email me to Craigslist, but still I wasn't so sure because I didn't know them..

In my thinking You did the right thing.I hope I'm doing the right thing too!

I just though next time I think about having a dog,I'm sure that I'll make sure I have a permanent home and wont buy a dog and will just adopt one.

    =(

Source(s): Good luck to the both of us!

You did the right thing. A lot of people do that. I have some friends who had a dog that they loved and spoiled. Then they had a baby and they could not put up with the dog's behavior (jumping on the couch, shedding, etc.) any more so they also banished it to a shelter. Not sure what ended up happening to it, but they got a new, better dog a few years later. Maybe you will find a better dog some day. Good luck!

I taught my dogs to not bite when they were puppies, but if one did happen to bite my son, he would be gone. I love my dogs very much and would be very sad to get rid of him, but I love my son more than my dogs. I'd rather find a better home for my dog than have to bury my son after the dog ends up killing him.

You did the right thing. :)

i had a black lab who bit my son, and it was because the dog had internal bleeding. he was put down and i did not realize what a mistake it was i was crying and crying thinking i was a murderer. i should have done the same thing but i was not thinking. im sorry for the loss of your dog.

    good luck!

You did the best thing you could've done, if I was in the same position I would of done the same. Good job, I appreciate that you didn't put him down.

I'm a dog lover, but if my dog ever bit my son, I'd have him put down.
