Corrupt FAT system on external hard drive?
I cant access any of my files on a external hard drive, my tech support has said it's a corrupt FAT system and there is nothing that can be done other than format the drive.
I would rather not and would appreciate an alternative.

As long as the disk is recognised in the BIOS then try this
Boot into Windows, check the drive letter of the External drive (e.g. drive F:) even if you can't access the drive contents but can see the drive this should work.
Go to Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (if using Vista or W7 right click and select run as Administrator)
When the black window pops up type chkdsk F: /r / f and press enter
(F: assumes this is the correct drive letter, if different then obviously adjust it)
this may fix the issue.
If not you can try again, this time use the following
F: fixboot
when finished reboot and you can also try
F: fixmbr
but only if the drive contents have not appeared
Failing that you may as well format the drive.

You could try it in a different machine, but it probably won't work
Running a Linux live CD has a better chance of reading it
Try this one
http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Download...
Pick 'vesa' for the graphics mode and look at the mounted drives at the bottom
An external drive will probably be named SDB(number) rather than SDA(number) which will be internal drives and partitions

Unfortunately i have bad news for you. If the file system is indeed corrupt you have no other option. ou can try getting someone who does data recovery if the data is very important to you but that costs alot of money

when you connect try these steps
start
run
cmd
type chkdsk (drive letter:) e.g if its the e: yuo would type chkdsk e: and keep doing this process a few times as it might work but is very unlikely and the best thing is to format Im afraid :(
