Birmingham University accommodation and internet question?
Only some houses on campus have a wireless connection. I was wondering, because I'm not in one of them, do the others have a modem of some kind so that I can bring a router and have wireless connection within my room?

some of them will in the student accommodation blocks and it will tell you on their websites if they have it. If it doesnt have this then the company who provides your internet access like sky or virgin will connect you to the internet free of charge because they want you to go with them. Then you pay so much a month for it. Its normally cheaper for you to go with someone who delivers a package where you get your Television channels, the internet and a telephone rental together. If you would like a router to connect a 2nd computer to the internet or just because you would like a wireless connection then the company who provide your internet service will normally provide routers and you can normally have 2 computers connected to the net without having to pay any extra. However there will usually be a one of charge of about 40 or 50 pounds for the router but when you get it it will be the easiest type to set up and if you have any problems you can ring their customer services call centre for help over the phone setting it up. By the way when you subscribe to the net it can sometimes take upto 2 weeks for someone to come to your house and connect it up.
Source(s): My experience I'm a first year student at Birmingham City University in Perry Barr and start in September. I share a 2 bedroom house down Aston Lane and we did not look for student places, we found it elsewhere but I notice there are lots of places to let for students. The university also own some houses which they let to students but they might be a bit expensive. I know they are just opposite the entrance to the BCU though and they have ports which provide access to the university intra-net as well. You dont need all that though, its just being lazy, but live near to the university which you are studying at because Birmingham is huge. I'm not from here origionally. If you are at Birmingham university in Edgebason watch out because some of the properties around that side of town are very expensive. Don't be alarmed, there are cheaper places in Birmingham if you look around. There is good student night life in Edgebaston. I wish you luck with your course and hope you enjoy it!
