What is the difference between canker sores and mouth herpes (Herpetic gingivostomatitis INSIDE MOUTH)?

Me and my friend recently got what looks like a white sore in our mouths. Mine is small, on my lower gums, and looks like it has a small hole in it. I had these before, but never researched them. I'm not sure if it is canker sores of Herpetic gingivostomatitis. And i'm not talking about the blister type of herpes on the outside of the lips, on talking about the white sore inside:

If i do have Herpetic gingivostomatitis instead of a canker sore, is it contagious, and can it spread to other parts of the body like regular herpes?

Update:

Thank you Cooker for the information. It seems like Herpetic gingivostomatitis also infects young adults alot. It seems that my family is usually prone to these canker sores or Herpetic gingivostomatitis. Im still not sure yet, but if it does not go away by a week, im going to the doctor.

    Unless you are between the ages of 6 months and 5 years, you probably don't have herpetic gingivostomatitis. That comes with a very high fever. If you do have it, it's going to be accompanied in adults by pharyngitis. If you had pharyngitis, you'd know it, because you will be a sick puppy.

    So in the absence of all of the listed symptoms, you have canker sores

    * Abrupt onset

    * High temperature (102-104°F)

    * Anorexia and listlessness

    * Gingivitis (This is the most striking feature, with markedly swollen, erythematous, friable gums.)

    * Vesicular lesions (These develop on the oral mucosa, tongue, and lips and later rupture and coalesce, leaving ulcerated plaques.)

    * Tender regional lymphadenopathy

    * Perioral skin involvement due to contamination with infected saliva

    Canker sores are NOT a virus and you're not going to have the symptoms you have when the immune system is fighting a virus (see symptoms above). They can spring from toothpaste, certain foods, stress, nutritional deficiencies, allergies, sensitivities, hormones, bacteria--and even genetic pre-disposition.

    They are not contagious, are not a herpes virus or any other virus--BUT they may be brought on by an immune system response to other viruses. They don't have fever and all of the other symptoms of a herpetic gingivostomatitis.

    AND they are NOT an STD--but neither is herpetic gingivostomatitis, either!

    I solved completly my herpes problem following this method: http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=415

    I've have been suffering from herpes for over 4 years. I tried everything, of course I went to the doctor about a hundred times, probably not that many, but it sure seems like it. It never did any good for long and caused all kinds of other issues having to do with taking too many antibiotics.

    I know the feelings of helplessness, isolation and real longing to be rid of herpes. I really didn?t think I would ever be rid of the virus. I thought that I would have to live the rest of my life without any lasting intimacy.

    I was lost in a sea of despair. This was because my doctor told me that I would need to be on drugs for the rest of my life. He also said to forget about ever having sex with anyone ever again. After hearing this I was very angry. There had to be something I could do. So I decided to see if I could find another way to deal with my herpes.

    After a lot of research I decided to try to follow this method http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=415

    The book details a unique method of actually killing viral pathogens responsible for the herpes virus as well as a quick and natural method for healing herpes blisters. After reading the book and taking action in just two days the blisters were gone. I haven't had an outbreak in 2 years. Herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are 2 types of herpes, Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). The symptoms for HSV-1 normally occur around the mouth while the symptoms for HSV-2 occur around the genitals. Nevertheless, both types of herpes can be transmitted to the genital and mouth areas. Herpes is often spread through sores. Most people often experience some form of sensation, including itching and tingling before they observe anything on the skin Modern medicine is mostly all about maintenance of the disease because big pharmaceutical companies are calling the shots. Hooking people on pharmaceuticals means recurring money the big drug companies. They, in turn, pay the doctors to keep writing prescriptions ?Don?t look for a real help here. Good luck!

    There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

    Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.

    The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

    Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.

    Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

    Someone told me L-Lysine 1000mg everyday when you first noticed the canker sore starts, and take it until it goes away, usually 4-5 days will speed up the recovery. It seems to work for me.
