What is the best way to keep bananas from turning black and mushy.?

I've tried the refrigerator and the plastic bags and wrapping them in brown paper bags. The best I got was six days before they turned black.

Eat them. You can put them in the freezer, they will turn black but not mushy. If you peel them and wrap them in plastic wrap it will be easier to use them when you take them out.

Bananas ripen (and turn black and mushy) fastest in dark moist places. So the best place to keep them would be either in the fridge, or in a fruit bowl in a sunny open space in your kitchen (not in the cupboard). This should definitely help, but when it comes down to it, wherever you keep the bananas they will ripen (just not as fast) so it's best to eat them when they are nice and yellow with just one or two brown spots.

Note: If you have bananas that turn black the best thing to do is make banana bread, because they will be nice and mushy which is perfect for making banana bread.

    * never keep them in a paper/plastic bag, The ethylene gas released by fruits and vegetables aids in the ripening process. To protect your bananas from exposure to ethylene gas, keep them as far away from other produce as you can.

    * use a wooden banana stand and hang the fruit. From experience, storing them in a metal bowl makes them brown and rot soon.

    * Keep them at a temperature of 57 degrees.

    * When storing bananas at room temperature, don't keep them next to other fruits.

    * If you want to use the ripe bananas at a later date, wrap each banana separately, Wrap closely with plastic wrap, and place in the vegetable bin or bottom of the refrigerator .The wrapped bananas will stay at the same level of ripeness in the refrigerator. while in the refrigerator, ensure they are not stored with other fruits.
