Martin Luther king used the tactics of Gandhi in India who advocated mass civil disobedience against a powerful all encompassing heavily armed British Empire. It is the only way the powerless can stand up and be heard. After all you cannot jail or kill everybody who protest against injustice.

Civil Disobedience is what brought Civil Rights. It wasn't done through speeches or through laws, which had been on the books since the end of the American Civil War. It came about through the courageous actions of mainly Black protesters acting disobediently.
