Yes, look at the top brands I know the Thor Technologies brands. You should really have a good quality surge protector. As a general rule the higher the joules on the board the more spikes and surges the unit will protect.

The advantage to Thor boards is that when the joules run out, the board has done it's job and shuts down. This is good because your equipment cannot be hit by further surges. The board is replaced by your retailer for free up to a life span of six years. Other boards have lights to display that they are no longer working. Like most of us these units are behind the cabinet and unless you inspect them on a regular basis you may be unprotected. Beware of lifetime guarantees. It is very hard to know what is the life span of any unit on the market. Thor have given you a definite life of 6 years.

The best thing is talk to your retailer. If he is not trained well in surge protection try another. You are putting a lot at risk with his recommendations.

I agree with AVDADDY, but there is more to power than spikes.

If it is a half decent home theater, the other concerns are line noise and dips. A good power conditioner like one from APC, Monster or Furman - made for home theater systems - will provide better protection and improve visual quality than just a surge protector (even a good one).

A high quality surge protector is never a bad idea for a home theatre installation. It is not a good idea to install a home theatre into a switched outlet. Too many components require constant power for built in clocks, programming functions, etc.

A surge supressor is a very good idea. Check TrippLite at the link below for true protection. When I worked with equipment at remote mountain sites this was all we used and we never had any problems.
