How come the best selling albums are Country and Hip Hop?

When the highest rated albums are usually progressive rock bands?

Update:

I kinda get hip-hop because of their singles, but why are country singles so popular? What happened to Art Rock and buying albums because they were GOOD AS AN ALBUM, not because you like to skip to track 7 on your way to work....

Because rural Caucasians and urban ethnic minorities are the predominant consumers of those genres. Those two demographic groups buy cd's at a higher rate than others, because they are less likely to download digital music song-by-song from the internet. Since they are low-income earners, they are less likely to have computers and ipods than suburbanites and middle-class Caucasians. Don't kill the messenger, but that's why.

Well, because people prefer Country and Hip Hop over Progressive Rock, I guess. You know, that's what's really popular nowadays, the Country and Hip Hop stuff... But you know, loads of Country isn't even that bad. Examples being Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Toby Keith, etc. But that's just my opinion.

We've all got our opinions. Many people don't like Prog. Rock. So their sales, naturally, will coincide with the public's preference; what is preferred, sells more. What is not, sells less.

    Progressive rock?

    The highest rated?

'Close to the Edge [Atlantic, 1972]

What a waste. They come up with a refrain that sums up everything they do--"I get up I get down"--and apply it only to their ostensible theme, which is the "seasons of man" or something like that. They segue effortlessly from Bach to harpsichord to bluesy rock and roll and don't mean to be funny. Conclusion: At the level of attention they deserve they're a one-idea group. Especially with Jon and Rick up front. C+'

'In the Court of the Crimson King [Atlantic, 1969]

The plus is because Peter Townshend likes it. This can also be said of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Beware the forthcoming hype--this is ersatz ****. D+'

And it really doesn't get much more positive than that.

Well, Country isn't Country at all nowadays. Instead, most of it has terrible Pop influences and what, which appeals to all kinds of younger people. Teenage girls go absolutely nuts over bands and artists like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Rascall Flatts, etc etc etc. This generation is who artists sell the hell out of their records to. In other words, just because it is considered "Country" as a genre, it's simply not. Never ever would true Country music be played on Pop radio, Country radio, and "variety" radio. Real Country hasn't topped the charts consistently for several years. That is what made me stop listening to country music today. If you want real Country, you have to go back to the Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr, Merle Haggard, George Jones, etc.

Basically, the "merge" of Country and Pop makes for one huge music market that a lot of people like for whatever reason.

Ratings and sales don't go hand in hand.

You'll never see a Josh Turner album praised like a Pink Floyd album, but you'll never see me buy a Pink Floyd album. It's all preference, and apparently most of America prefers to buy country and hip-hop.

Because a lot of people like country music and hip hop. This in turn leads them to buy new albums by artists they like. It's not really that difficult to understand.

Just because you don't like something and consider it bad music doesn't mean that other people don't feel differently.
