Christian: Everything in the bible is 100% true and should be taken literally.
Me: There's slavery in the bible
Christian: That was written for people of that time
Me: It says god created the universe in 7 days.
Christian: That is just used as a story for children. I'm sure there's a more detailed version.
Me: It says the son of your god came to earth.
Christian: That was real.
Me: ...

Ok, I'm not trying to be a smart*** either, so I'll just say what I think. We (Christians or anyone) can only walk in the light that we've been given. So if I don't understand something in the Bible, I set it aside until I can study it out. That's not dancing around something that's inconvenient, nor am I trying to justify myself. That's just where I am in my understanding.

I'm not sure I know what you mean. If you're referring to the OT, those laws were written by Jews, for Jews. It isn't a matter of what is "convenient" and what isn't. Gentiles are not and have never been under Jewish law, so it isn't "picking and choosing" to not follow those laws. It would be like asking why people in western Europe no longer follow Roman laws. And the answer to that is obviously because they're not *living* in the Roman Empire. In the same way, we aren't living in ancient Israel, and Christians are not Jews.
Jesus is quoted as saying (paraphrased) that following the spirit of the law is much better than following the letter of the law. And the spirit of the law is summed up in two commandments: Love God, love one another.

Ok, I will try to explain it in as simple of terms as I can.... 1. the OT which the Jews call the , I think, and pardon me if I am wrong, Tanaka, was written to THEM.... they were the *called out people* God chose to *pull out* of the population of the earth and make them special in the sense they would TEACH the world some day be a nation of priest !! 2. We do NOT ignore any of the Bible, we are NOT, and I repeat NOT Jewish nor of the Jewish line... the *worship* laws are theirs ONLY....the 10 commandments we DO follow, but not as WORDS written but as Jesus, meaning IF He is our Lord and Savior we have them on our HEARTS !! they become who we are IN CHRIST !!!! 3. Christians who CLAIM to follow the WHOLE Bible are, frankly LIARS, do they sacrifice or wash before entering the Temple ? Do they even attend a Temple ?? Do they stone their children ? Beat their slaves ?? See where I am going with this ?? The Bible says IF you follow the law you better follow it ALL !! Break just ONE rule and it is all over !! And IF they claim to follow the whole Bible and that includes the LAW, then tell me just what Jesus means to them.. Not a thing !! If they follow the Law they are calling God and Jesus liars... 4. Jesus was the LAST sacrifice accepted by God, according to Christian faith... and IF people would read the NT, it starts out saying, *And Jesus came for the Jew first* !!! Meaning he came to THEM to show THEM who and what He was and is..... Most thought he was a liar.... and so IN came the Gentiles !! Not our choice but Gods !! God directed the NEW COVENANT, NOT us !!!!!! 5. and in conclusion : God picked and chose NOT us !!!! He picked ONE people, they did not follow, so he picked others to continue.... go in peace..... God bless

So you want Christians stoning adulterers? (Leviticus 20:10) If that happened, we'd lose half of America's politicians in 10 minutes. Many Christians recognize that the Bible was compiled several centuries ago, and not every practice is appropriate for today's society.

There is no bible.. it's just the word of God..
It is as easy as following the first 2 commandments.
Forget what religions say. Put your life in God's hands and you won't be bickering with the fanatics about whether Jesus was white or black or other silly arguments I see ppl have here.

Because half of us Christians are phony Christians who will still go to hell. Jesus proved that in the parable of the wise and foolish virgins at Matthew 25:1-12. But if you are talking about the OT law, here's why:
The OT law was temporary: What purpose then does the law serve? It
was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to
whom the promise was made... - Galatians 3:19.
having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of
commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself
one new man from the two, thus making peace - Ephesians 2:15.
having wiped out the handwriting of the requirements that was
against us, which was contrary to us. And he has taken it out of
the way, having nailed it to the cross - Colossians 2:14.
Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through
the body of Christ, that you may be married to another -- to Him
who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God
- Romans 7:4.
...and from sincere faith, from which some, having strayed, have
turned aside to idle talk, desiring to be teachers of the law,
understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm
- 1 Tim. 1:5-7.
Galatians 5:4,7 - You have become estranged from Christ, you who
attempt to be justified by law (the O.T. law); you have fallen from
grace... You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?
~ Note: The KJV has Christ is become of no effect unto you. The
Greek words are apo and katargeo. Apo also means of any kind of
separation of one thing from another by which the union or fellowship
of the two is destroyed. Katargeo also means destroy, loose, to cause
a person or thing to have no further efficiency, to cause to cease,
put an end to, do away with, annul, abolish. The word for fallen from
also means to fall from a thing, to lose it, to perish, and to fall
powerless, be without effect regarding of the divine promise of
salvation. Obviously those who have fallen from grace were running
well (the race of faith, 2 Tim. 4:7) and obeying the truth at some
earlier time, but then they fell from grace.

They tend to believe what they are taught or brought up in. The truth is that it would be extremely hard to follow the Bible. It even goes against our modern sense of right and wrong. Slavery is considered ok as long as the rules are followed but what would we consider someone owning slaves our idea of a Christian?

No, you are not being a smart A$##@. Christians indeed do this. They cherry pick it to support their views, and you can make a case for any thing at all using the bible.
Here... try this one.
How to get to Heaven. And you will see that if you read them all, There is no possible way you can get to heaven. There is absolutely nothing you can do. But, folks pick the phrases they like, and just conveniently omit the others.

Arghh, that's so frustarting too ... worse yet is the fundamentalism ... I explained this to my daughter in these words: I work at a retail store, you can try on a bathing suit but you can't try on underwear in the fitting rooms. She said, have them put up a sign that says no underwear in fitting rooms : And I said, with fundamentalism: you'd have people taking off their own underwear before entering the fitting room ...
