Metaphorically and spiritually speaking, what is HEART?

The Japanese have a word for heart (Kokoro) that actually means mind and heart. Kokoro implies the heart, essence, or center of something as well as the meaning of the mind. The spirit, heart, and mind are all one and the same. The Japanese dictionary says that Kokoro is:

"Originally, kokoro referred to the beat of the heart, which was considered to be the essential organ of life and the source of all activities. By extension, kokoro refers to all human activities affecting the outside world through intention, emotion, and intellect."
