I need to figure out the name of the book but I'm drawing complete blanks. I read it in high school, but I completely forget the name of it.
It's about a guy who wants to get the girl, but he's poor and she wants the status and riches. He works hard and becomes a rich bigwig, but by the time he gets there she's already engaged or married to another guy and doesn't accept his advances.
I think it was based in the 1800s in New York city or some other industrial city.
