How do I convert my pc to accept wifi?

I have a home that uses a wireless router hooked up to a satellite connection. I want my computer at my home across the street to use the same wireless connection without having to purchase another satellite service. The computer does not have a wifi card.

Provided the signal from your wireless router is strong enough and can be received at your home across the street, then to "convert" requires either installing a PCI wireless network adapter or a USB wireless adapter. Chances are however, unless the router is installed in the room closest to the outside wall and the house across the street where you want signal, and your computer is in the room closest to the outside wall and to the house that has the router, your signal may not be as well as you would like. The idea of running an ethernet cable from one house and to cross a street to another is insane... unless it's a little dirt road in nowhere land, the city or whoever will make you take it down when it's seen. But to answer your question, install a PCI wireless network adapter inside the computer or a USB wireless adapter dongle will allow your PC to accept wifi.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you aren't using an 802.11n router, to get one. You don't necessarily need to upgrade the components in the house that has the router... just leave the original router running servicing that house. Attach the 802.11n router to that network and "beam" a signal to the house across the street, get an "N" adapter for your PC.... and you should do just fine. Might cost you $100.00 to get a router and adapter... if you want quality equipment which will pay for itself within a few months.

buy a wifi card or run wire between the 2 houses. A wifi card/adapter is necessary to connect to a wireless router, and if it's not integrated already, you'd have to buy and install one.

some previous respondents might desire to envision the question, on the grounds that it is not an undemanding connection sharing situation... Your surely question does not have a confident or no answer. What you pick is to place the prompt adapter into "Host AP" mode. whether you're able to try this relies upon on the adapter - some can, some won't be able to. you may desire to hunt for advice from the documentation on your adapter, or a minimum of quote the particular kind right here. in the adventure that your adapter helps it it's going to be interior the motive force settings someplace: it is not a typical abode windows function because of the fact not all adapters help it.

It depends on how far across the street your home is. Wifi has a distance limit like satellite.

Assuming the signal is strong enough, get a USB WIFI dongle.

We used them for two old laptops, they cost about £5 from Ebay and are easy to set up.

Don't worry about not having a WiFi card, that's probably not important to being able to receive the wireless signal.
