Has anyone here done headlights tests?

Alot of companies don't rate their lights or express them in lumens or luminosity. Sometimes not even hours of battery life. Photos are also tough to gauge because of the differences in brightness and the ease to adjust.

Cateye is consistent to some degree, rating in candlepower, but no one else rates that way.

Has anyone found a good bright headlight with more than a narrow beam and some reasonable battery life? LEDs are inherently very narrow spotlights by nature.

Has anyone modded an AA or AAA headlight they liked to take a 6-volt lantern battery to increase life?

What are your stories and experiences?

Buying them all to test is a really expensive proposition.

I found it annoying when the light manufacturers used different measures of intensity, it's difficult to compare lumens, watts and candlepower.

The lights I settled on are in the attached links. The EL610 is a rechargeable one, with a built in battery, and the EL320 uses 4 AA batteries.

The EL610 gives a much wider beam than the EL610, and if used in flashing or low mode where there are street lights the battery lasts well. When used on roads without street lights the main beam gives enough light to reach 30 MPH downhill, so it's quite good.

I carry a second EL320 in case the battery goes in the EL610, and I find that using the 2 EL320s gives a reasonable spread of light for most circumstances.

LED lights have such a long battery life that I don't really see the point in modding them to use an bigger, external, battery, so I've never tried using a modded light. I used to have a pair of lights that used external rechargeable batteries, and I always found it a pain to have to fit and remove the lights, batteries and cables whenever I had to. I wasn't too disappointed when they were stolen.

My best headlight was the standard square headlight on my Honda Ascot VT500FT..

I really don't understand your concern..they work in the dark.
