Another name for Indians From India?

This is for research papers and we are trying to not be ambiguous with American Indians and the people from India.

A few things to keep in mind:

India was not India until the 1950s.

Some American Indians use "Indian" others "Indun" others their tribal name as in Navajo, Cherokee, Sioux, Etc.

Let us know if you are from India or American Indian heritage or none of those.

Update:

Desi: You answered it right so I guess you understood enough to get my jist, Thanks!

Update 2:

For additional Help:

An American Indian lecturer has stated that the British have purposely used India as a Red herring to throw people off of discussing American Indian matters.

Update 3:

The word "Indians" origin:

From Spanish and Italian, "In Dios". It is not from the country India.

FYI: Republic of India did not exist before 1950. However the region called India existed way long before American Native Indians were called Indians. BTW: The name India was given to this region in Asia by the Greeks owing to the Indus river. There ain't any Indus in America!

You might want to remind yourself that Christopher Columbus was trying to find a searoute to India and got lost in sea. That is how he accidently landed in America and thus the discovery of America itself. So if India did not exist earlier what was Columbus looking for?

Native Indians were called Indians because of the confusion on the lands which Columbus landed. They mistook them for the Indians and thus they acquired the misnomer.

So you should be looking for alternate name for American Indians - ie Native Americans, First Nations or Aboriginals. In all due respect, since you have missed this basic fact, you might want to have a closer look at your research paper. As a lecturer myself, I think you might want to use this a cue to rethink the quality of the materials you have researched (which have overseen this fundamental issue). Sorry to be nosey, but just my 1p worth!

Edit: The name India appears in loads of European chronicles through history for more than two millenia. FYI: The Dutch, Portuguese, Danes, Frech and the Swedes all had their own East "India" Company refering to the name India to mean the country in Asia. So to call it a British scam would not be right. Good luck with your research paper.

Edit 2: I have added a few more citations on Columbus' failed journey to India. This is in response to repeated emails from the questioner.
