Of recent QB's selected in the draft, who do you think will bust and who will be a success?

Format is: Name (Rd. - Pk. - Ovr.): Team...BUST / SUCCESS / DEBATABLE... Explanation

2010 DRAFT

Sam Bradford (1 - 1 - 1): St. Louis Rams... BUST... The offense Bradford had at Oklahoma was really incredible. Jermaine Gresham, Manuel Johnson, Brandon Caleb, and etc. really helped him out... His offensive scheme was also pretty wacky... Without the all stars on offense, I think he may be exposed. The Rams also based their decision based on a combine where he wasn't getting rushed at all. Their mediocre O Line may make him afraid of the pocket.

Tim Tebow (1 - 25 - 25): Denver Broncos... BUST... I don't see Tebow working out as a QB. He is already injured, and seems almost TOO athletic to be used as a QB. I think he will be injured a lot before they try to have him change positions, which might or might not work.

Jimmy Clauson (2 - 16 - 48): Carolina Panthers... SUCCESS... Jimmy Clauson was my #1 QB going into the 2010 draft. He didn't have that many great recievers (Golden Tate, but not much after him) but he made it work. He also had a pretty bad coaching department in terms of play calling. I think the Rams will end up kicking themselves over not picking Clausen with the #1 pick.

Colt McCoy (3 - 20 - 85): Cleveland Browns... DEBATABLE... I don't see McCoy as a starting QB. I just don't. It may be his quick hand injury, but in watching the first couple of games he doesn't have the poise needed to control an NFL football team. That being said, he was selected in the 3rd round. 3rd rounders aren't usually expected to become pro bowlers. Sure, every now and then a Matt Schaub (the only current starting QB selected in the 3rd round) will slip by other teams, but normally (Charlie Frye, Josh McCown, Charlie Batch) they will be back ups. I think that will be the fate of Colt McCoy.

2009 NFL DRAFT

Matthew Stafford (1 - 1 - 1): Detroit Lions... SUCCESS... This is a success thanks to the Lions orgainization. Stafford came in last year with tools but no foundation. He could throw the ball deep, could lead a team, and could do everything right... He just needed someone to be there to catch that pass, to be able to lead, and be able to win it with.... That's what the Lions did. They brought in Nate Burleson, Rob Sims, Tony Scheffler, Jahvid Best, and more for him to work with. They showed an obvius lean toward the offense side of the ball in order to make Matthew Stafford not turn into Joey Harrington.

Mark Sanchez (1 - 5 - 5): New York Jets... BUST... I knew right when that magazine with Sanchez shirtless on it came out that he would be a bust. He was living up the money and fame, putting football in the back seat. Did Drew Brees do that? Did Tom Brady do that? Did Peyton Manning do that? It showed last year with 20 interceptions even though he had recievers of Braylon Edwards and Wallace Wright.

Josh Freeman (1 - 17 - 17): Tampa Bay Buccaneers... BUST... A first rounder needs to be a starter. I don't see Freeman turning into a starter. He seems like a possible solid backup for a star, but not a solid number 1.

Pat White (2 - 12 - 44): Miami Dolphins... BUST... Really he hasn't even competed with Henne or Thigpen as he was expected to. He may even be cut from the team when they reduse the rosters. Teams will be interested if that happens, but don't expect to hear much about him from now on out.

2008 NFL DRAFT

Matt Ryan (1 - 3 - 3): Atlanta Falcons... SUCCESS... There isn't much doubt anymore, Ryan has been a success. Hitting 3,000 and nearly 3,000 yards in his first 2 seasons, Ryan seems like the real deal. Good thing for Falcon fans.

Joe Flacco (1 - 18 - 18): Baltimore Ravens... SUCCESS... Considering he almost lead his team to the SuperBowl not once but twice, especially with average wide outs, I consider him pretty successful.

Whatcha think?

Update:

@ thatdude - If I hated him for throwing 20 interceptions, wouldn't I have made Stafford (20 INT in 10 G) a bust?

I didn't even mention that Freeman had 18 INT's and I made him a bust!

Update 2:

@Rex - I'm making predictions.

How can you declare anybody in the 09 draft class a bust, or a success for that matter, yet? If this was 1998 would you be calling Peyton Manning a bust?

I assume that you're projecting them to the future, in which case I agree with your evaluations of the '10 draft class, but disagree with you on Sanchez and Freeman.

Mark did throw 20 picks last year, but over half of them came in just three games and he had 10 starts where he threw 1 or less pick, so he was far more inconsistent than he was actually bad. He still has a ton to prove, but he has enough talent around him that he won't need to be Drew Brees to win a lot of games.

Josh Freeman is a guy that I wasn't very high on coming into the draft, but liked more and more as I saw him play last year. He is still very raw and has some minor mechanics issues to work out, but there's a ton to like about him. He's built like JaMarcus Russell with the same kind of arm strength, but he's actually a great athlete and has Jake Plummer/Daunte Culpepper type mobility. He also has a quick release and though his accuracy can be inconsistent its not bad enough that I don't see it improving. His leadership ability, mostly in college, also impressed me. He had a very mediocre supporting cast at K State and had to literally carry the offense on his back, which he did pretty effectively. He probably won't have much help around him for a while so he may never get much further than being a Jason Campell type, but his physical tools are off the charts and he has some great intangibles.

Bradford will probably be a bust for the first few seasons and will be lucky to not have an injury ruin one of those season, but I think the Rams will eventually build the team up around him and he will eventually be a decent QB. At Oklahoma rarely was he ever under pressure in the backfield and when he was he usually lost.

I've thought Tebow would never make it in the NFL, but recently I've been rethinking that because of his work ethic. If there is anybody who can change his throwing mechanics and style of play it would be him.

Sanchez I don't think will be a bust nor a great success.

Freeman reminds me of Jamarcus Russell, but with a better attitude. At Tampa Bay he will probably never be a great QB, because it has been and probably will be a defensive minded team. However I think he will be average and not a bust.

I don't think Pat White was ever really expected to be a starting QB, but more of a filler for the Wildcat formation or a gadget play receiver much like Brad Smith and Antwaan Randle El. So I don't know that he's a bust unless he doesn't even make it as that.

I think your analysis is flawed.

What a QB had as a team in College, and the talent they faced, is nothing to be compared to NFL teams.

Bradford, IF he's mobile and evasive enough, may become a good NFL QB.

IF he has to run for his life, too much, he'll be the next David Carr, or Tim Couch.

Tebow, his talents are reminicent of Steve Young, BEFORE he became a 49er.

With SMART coaching, he CAN turn into a good NFL QB. IF he's pushed into service too soon, THAT's another story.

Clauson, if they don't give him protection, he'll get creamed, a-la Carr.

He will need more targets that Steve Smith, but he seems very well suited for this Offense in Carolina.

Colt McCoy, Jon Gruden is looking forward to coaching him, NEXT YEAR. Obviously, assuming Mangini gets shown the door. McCoy is very talented, but is he coach-able. We know how fickle Gruden can be about QB's.

Your 2009 opinions are not based on ANY real football premises.

Freeman's biggest problem last season, was that the coaching staff was inexperienced, because Ownership was STUPID in firing their General Manager AND their Head Coach.

Owners need to shut-up, and sign the checks, AND leave the FOOTBALL operations to those who know what they are doing! Morris had never actually been a Coordinator before, he certainly is NOT ready to be Head Coach. He's the Barack Obama of the NFL. No experience, same results!

Sanchez should have stayed one more year at USC, but he may work out to be better that you think.

Pat White, only if he finds himself in the right system, can he have success. He's too small to take the punishment that most schemes will leave him vulnerable to.

BTW-Tom Brady was a 6th round after-thought!! Who knew things would unfold in New England as they did. Had the "tuck-rule" been not called, he'd be just another guy, maybe. Who can honestly say?

Where was Kurt Warner drafted? Once he got his chance, his star shined brightly.

Who was League MVP Rich Gannon, before the Raiders, with Gruden as the Coach, got him?

    Joe Montana? THIRD ROUNDER!!!!

John Unitas, was drafted by the Steelers. He never had a chance THERE!

Brett Favre, was drafted by the Falcons!! Imagine how different things would BE, IF they kept him AND let him play!

Like I said, your analysis is flawed.

Bradford won't be a bust be he will never be a star. Tebow bust. Clausen back up QB. McCoy not a bust because he was taken in the 3rd round but he probably wont ever be a starter. Stafford will be good but unless the Lions get a good line he will only ever be great at another team. Sanchez he will be somewhere around a Jeff George, will have good moments but won't be a true leader. Josh Freeman bust. Pat White does what they got him to do only in the right systems will he ever be a mediocre QB, but his draft position was a bust. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco two great picks they will probably be the next Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers for their teams.

Success- Flacco, Ryan, Freeman, Sanchez, Stafford, Claussen, and Bradford.

    Bust- White and Tebow.

Colt McCoy can go either way.

I agree with all except Jimmy Clausen and Josh Freeman, I don't think Clausen will get a chance to start (in Carolina any way) and will be a backup journeyman for a QB, while Freeman will be a good but not great QB for a couple years.

Success: Sanchez, Stafford, Tebow, Mccoy, Flacco, Ryan

    Bust: Bradford, Clauson, White, Freeman

Stafford is a very talented player but may not ever live up to his full potential, however i feel guilty calling him a bust because the players around him are the ones that need to step up. theres a saying in football: youre only as good as your teams worst player

I think White will be a success with the wildcat offense. He'll probably turn into a running back or wide receiver.

Sanchez will do well, you just doubt him because he threw 20 int.

How about this: Peyton Manning threw 28 int in his rookie year, lead the league

Sanchez has a good team behind him, and he won't have to be the main guy most of the time, but he was good in the playoffs last year.

edit: Success: Sanchez, Clausen, Ryan, Flacco

Bust: Stafford, White, Freeman, Probably Tebow

    Undecided: Bradford, Mccoy

And, btw, He has Santonio Holmes in the lineup and if the Jets get a legit WR in the draft next year, Sanchez will go nuts and throw for years, PLUS he has a good O-Line to give him time to throw.

Don't go by media, go by the good times and he had good times last year.

Source(s): HE WAS A ROOKIE LAST YEAR, ROOKIES DON'T TEND TO THROW 20 TD IN THEIR FIRST YEAR.

I think Tebow could actually be successful more as a RB and some wildcat then a QB
