Is the Air National Guard a good choice?
I'm looking into joining the Air National Guard, mainly because I want to still have the option of living my everyday life when I get back from basic and the individual training. I know that there's a required one weekend a month and two weeks out of the year for drill and such, but will I lead a regular normal life otherwise?
I want to use the ANG as a platform, to get where I eventually want to go, I just want to make sure it's the right choice. I'm scared to sign any kind of lengthy contract, but that's just because I don't know what's going to happen in my future.
Any advice would be welcome.

The US Air Force is made up of 3 components:
1. The Regular Air Force - active duty, 24/7/365, federally funded, federally controlled, based worldwide
2. The USAF Reserve - part time, 1 weekend a month/2 weeks a year, federally funded, federally controlled, based locally, deployed worldwide in support of the regular Air Force
3. The Air National Guard - part time, 1 weekend a month/2 weeks a year, federally funded, STATE controlled (unless mobilized for overseas deployment), based locally, deployed worldwide in support of the regular Air Force
The Air Guard, along with the Army Guard, typically offers better benefots than the Reserves. The Guard, being a state organization, receives all of the same federal benefits (pay, benefits, retirement) that a Reservist gets but also gets state benefits (like 100% tuition at state colleges for example) that a reservist will not get.
Realize that all initial military contracts, all branches and components, are for 8 years, served in some combination of active duty, drilling reserves/guard or IRR, A typical reserve/guard contract is what is known as a 6x2 (six-by-two) meaning 6 years of drill status (1 wknd/mo; 2 wks/yr) followed by 2 in the IRR. While some shorter contracts may exist (such as a 4x4 or 3x5) they will not offer the full benefits package of a 6x2.
Also realize that in your 8 years you will probably do at least 1 if not 2 deployments ranging from 90 days to 1 year.
