Even if you are Christian...?

Which is a better argument from authority?

Multiple Bronze Age writers who may or may not have been on hallucinogenic drugs writing a book with no prior research other than purported voices which they may or may not have heard, who claim that a God exists and has done many specific actions, often which they did not witness

or...

The foremost respected physicist of perhaps all time, with more tools than those respected during prior ages, writing a theory that God ->is not necessary<- for the creation of the universe, after much research.

Update:

Argument from authority is not a fallacy. It is Induction. Argument from unqualified authority is a fallacy.

Update 2:

Hawking is not the first, but he is (as stated) perhaps the most respected, and certainly one with the most modern tools with which to do so.

Well when it comes to events in first century Palestine, I would be inclined to go for the testimony of people who were living in that time and place, rather than a physicist living 2,000 years later, no matter how brilliant.

"Argument from unqualified authority is a fallacy."

Being a physicist does not make Stewphen Hawking particularly well qualified to comment upon either theology or ancient history.

  • When Stephen Hawking shows me a clear cut proof of how the universe exists, the laws of physics exist, what the source of the quantum field is, and observable proof that M-Theory is real, then maybe I'll see it as an argument from authority

In other words, when cosmologists are out of jobs since we have figured out everything and the field is dead, then there will be proof

As of now, it is his opinion, no more no less, and is little more than a bit of pre publication controversy in order to sell more copies of his book

At least Hawking is smart enough to know that the preponderance of the Bible was written during the Iron Age.

Its not like Hawking is the first scientist to theorize how the universe would work without a creator.

Neither, since argument from authority is a fallacy.

its up to you im not persuaded by you though but if enough people told you the sky was purple would you believe them or would you go by what you feel to be true its the same thing man i myself believe in god so its not even really a question to me just like some people dont believe in god it is not our place to judge everyone walks there own path and all it is people telling there theory and trying to prove it i have nothing to prove because i have faith

    Source(s): faith
