What is a habitable planet and how far away is it ?

2.2 light years, 20.5 light years or 130 light years (HR 8799)

Update:

Earth, of course is one. What I meant was exoplanet, outside our solar system.

Every answer is educational and informative. Thank you.

There are no planets 2.2 light years away

You have Gliese 581 c and Gliese 581 d approximately 20.3 light years away, these are two planets *believe* to be in the habitable zone. We don't really know much about either of these planets - so it is not safe to assume they're habitable, we can only believe.

And HR 8799 is a young main sequence star (approximately 60 million years old) located 129 light years away.

    Hopefully that answers your question.

There is no planet other than the Earth known to have conditions on its surface that would allow a human to survive there.

The best bet we have right now for finding native life forms of any kind outside the Solar System is a planet called Gliese 581 d. It is located about 21 light years away and orbits a red dwarf star. However, its size and mass suggest that it probably has a much thicker atmosphere than the Earth, and furthermore that atmosphere likely contains chemicals that would render it unbreathable to humans.

We have yet to find any that are actually habitable. They have just found some that are with in the habitable sections of their star meaning they are far enough to away to have temperatures and what not that humans can sustain.

We will need a way of verifying the planet has a magnetic Field for it to even have the possibility of life. These magnetic Fields serve two purposes they one shield us from radiation and solar winds. Two protect the atmosphere from solar winds. If a planet doesn't have these magnetic fields your atmosphere will get blown away by solar winds. (this is what they believe happened to water on mars and mars atmosphere).

Just because it is with in a habitable zone doesn't mean it will be habitable. There are many things it will need aside from just being in this zone for it to be that way. Moons that keep it on a stable axis, water and so on.

There is no known habitable planet anywhere (that we know of).

The only planet we know we can live on is Earth.

There are over 400 exoplanets known, none of them (at least as far as we know) are habitable by humans.

Some exist within their star's "habitable zone", which simply means the planet orbits within the region around the star where liquid water could THEORETICALLY exist on the surface.

That doesn't mean water exists there, or that the planet is habitable.

I have no idea how far away it is cause im only a 9th grader. But i know that there is a habitable planet next to Jupiter that is actually habitable. Its has a rocky surface and a atmosphere quite like earth's. It was on NASA's list of important projects, until they had a financial problem and they lost their funding.(i think that the president caused this problem. Now instead of being able to get out to space in 2020, the project has been pushed back until further notice. Another planet like the one i described would be way out there. So instead of bettering our lives and helping the benfit of generations to come, The project has been suspended cause the president gave all the money away.

HR 8799 is located 130 light years away.

The closest star to the sun is Alpha Centauri, located 4.3 light years away. (hence 2.2 light years is wrong)

20.5 light years would be the distance to the so-called "New Earth" Gliese 581c (see source), hence probably the right answer.

Nobody knows where the nearest habitable planet is, thats what we're still trying to find out. We haven't found one yet. A habitable planet is a planet which conditions are favorable for humans to live. Or atleast for some life to exist. But we haven't found one yet that we KNOW for a fact is habitable.

Everyone knows where the nearest habitable planet is...IT IS EARTH. We were born here, we know it is habitable and we know it is inhabited. It is right here. Zero lightyears away. Everywhere on it is less than 20 million meters away.
