Should you be slightly worried if your urine is green?

Seriously... I thought I was peeing out a meadow. Would doctoral advice be a good idea?

Before you panic think back over what you have eaten or drunk over the last 24 hours. Some green foods such as spinach or asparagus can tint your urine just as beetroot can turn it red. Medication can also affect the colour. If it stings to pass water or you feel unwell then you need to seek medical advice but if not drink plenty of water but if it stays green in 24 hours it would be worth a medical opinion.

It depends on what you ate recently. Did you eat a lot of veggies, such as spinach, brocoli or other dark greens? If so, I wouldn't worry. If you have no pain or difficulty urinating, I would wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem disappears. If not, I would make an appointment, but I really think it is just something you ate or drank. For example, if you take a lot of vitamin C, your urine turns super bright yellow and smells stronger. As long as you are not peeing more often or having pain or difficulty releasing the urine, I really don't think it's a big deal. If you were to see blood in your urine, it would be an entirely different matter, and I would suggest a trip to the e.r.

The possible cause of green or blue urine is due to the effect of artificial color in food or drug. It may also result from medications including amitriptyline, indomethacin, and doxorubicin.

    Blue or green urine

Blue or green urine can result from:

■Foods. Asparagus may give urine a greenish tinge as well as a characteristic odor.

■Medications. A number of medications produce blue urine, including amitriptyline, indomethacin (Indocin), cimetidine (Tagamet), the anti-nausea drug Phenergan and several multivitamins. A dye used in several medications that treat urinary pain (Urised, others) can turn urine blue.

■Medical conditions. Familial hypercalcemia, a rare inherited disorder that causes high levels of calcium, is sometimes called blue diaper syndrome because children with the disorder have blue urine.

  • you need to see a doctor as soon as possible if your urine is green.
