There are many, many ships which have sunk over the years and, especially in the deep oceans, their location is not known exactly. In other cases, ships have disappeared and their fate is unknown. Often there is not the financial support available to launch an expedition to search for them.

Personally, I'd be interested to know what happened to the S.S. Waratah, a passenger ship which vanished without trace in 1909, taking over 200 passengers and crew with her. She had sailed from Australia to Durban, and was to travel on to Cape Town and from there head for London. After leaving Durban, she was never seen again. The weather was not good and some sources indicate that the ship was top-heavy and unstable. Not a good combination.

I remember reading about this in my childhood, and was very struck by the tale of Mr Sawyer, a passenger who had been disturbed by both the excessive rolling motion of the ship and by a series of bad dreams in which he saw a figure holding a sword and a bloodstained rag. He disembarked at Durban. Very sensibly, as it turned out.

Various people have tried searching for the wreck of the Waratah, most recently in 2004, but all have been unsuccessful.
