how soon after the birth of a baby can a DNA test be done?
I live in the UK. My son's girlfriend has just had her baby, my son wants to have his name on the certificate, but there is doubt as to whether or not it is his child. The doubt has been caused by her mother, who is not a nice person and throws in unpleasant comments just to stir things up. I need to know, I haven't seen the baby yet, circumstances have "let me off" so far. Until I know I am afraid to make any kind of connection with the child. I can not "bond" with this child and continuously have her mother throwing accusations in the air, I would find it to upsetting, also I have other children to think of, I can not allow them to get close to the baby and then have it ripped away, that would be cruel. My son's girlfriend has agreed with me that we need to get this test done to stop these things being said. So what do we do now?
herdoula - its not the girlfriend making the comments - its the mother of the girlfriend.

The test can be done anytime after birth. Even if there is doubt keep a positive attitude and make your son's girlfriend feel like she and the baby are apart of your family. That way when the test comes back that it is your son's baby there will be no hard feelings on either side and the most important thing is that the baby feels loved from all parties. Also, as you say about her mom you have to "consider" your source!! When you get the results back that it is your son's tell her mom to go for a walk on the autobahn.

As soon as the baby is born a test can be done. It is not an invasive test. It just involves swabbing the inside of the baby's and father's cheeks. Your son's girlfriend does not seem like a very nice person if she needs this test to stop making nasty comments.
Edited to add: It may take a couple weeks to get the results.

You could have gotten a dna test done while the child was in the womb using an amniocentesis..although those do come with risks. You can get the test done at any time just have the mother ask the baby's pediatrician on how to get that done..

At birth they can take the cord blood and use that. After that they would just use a normal cheek swab, I see no harm that could come to the baby from doing that.
I think it normally takes somewhere between 3-7 days for the results though.

yes you can do the test now. you can do it in a private clinic, or you can have it done by court order which would turn out to be hundreds of $$ cheaper.
