The A & P was also where my Mom went and remember her grinding coffee. Also remember the A & P brand of sweet rolls from I think Ann Page made with cardomom in them, yum. Also would get 45rpm records there in a package. There would be songs that didn't sell well or older ones that were left over and some I never heard of. Thanks for the memory of A & P and the smell of fresh coffee beans.

I remember those old hand grinders that so many of the grocery stores had. The customers never were allowed to use it - but the employees were always happy to help when the customers approached the machine.

Today, most of the stores offer an electric grinder & it's self serve. If you forget to empty the chamber prior to putting your beans into the top - you end up with the unknown leftover variety of coffee beans from the last customer.

This is the reason why I now buy my whole beans in a sealed bag from my local Starbucks. The freshness date on the back of the bag tell me if I an getting new or old stock.

Each morning, I grind the beans in my old electric grinder & that fresh smell fills the air (ahhh) & my daily ritual begins....again.

We had the A&P's too, but the grinding machines were at each checkout. We always vied for the "honor" of being the one who ground the coffee while Mom completed the checking out! LOVED the smell... always have, always will... of coffee grounds. But, strangly, I never liked the flavor and do not drink coffee.

These days, when I shop, I enjoy going passed the coffee grinders in the coffee aisle, so I can smell that wonderful smell again. Heck, I could SNORT the grounds, but hate the taste!

    Have a Seasoned day!

No and never saw that in any store until the first Albertson's opened here. Now Wal-mart, IGA, Homeland have them. I do have a hand-crank coffee grinder, the same kind as the one used in Dances With Wolves, haven't used it yet but it is functional. I have an electric grinder I got at a yard sale, fresh ground is good and whole beans stay fresher longer don't they?

Loved to smell coffee and cool or rainy mornings are the best combination for a hot pot of coffee. Got an old electric percolator I use sometimes for a greater effect.

You can grind fresh coffee at some stores today. We buy coffee bean and grind our own. I like strong coffee. At work I make a pot of double bag brew. People love it!

Yes, at the A & P just like you said. I used to love the smell of the coffee beans. When I was little I used to watch my mother do it and when I got older I got to do it myself.

I do too!!!! It was heavenly coffee and I didn't even drink coffee back then either. If the store has a Starbuck's in it, they can ground the beans for you.

The food stores still have a coffee grinder and sell whole beans.

Upon reading your initial question, my answer was going to be about A&P. I remember mom and dad buying their freshly ground coffee beans there. Mom and dad had that old electric silver aluminum coffee pot that you could watch the coffee perking up in the clear top of it. Didn't take much to entertain us kids back then, watching the percolator perk. I wish I had that old coffee pot of theirs, just for the memory. lol
