I totally agree with you there. Murder is just as heinous, regardless of the "rationale" behind it. I love kids and can't seem to stand people who think they can murder kids and get away with it coz those victims couldn't ever speak up for themselves.

They're both bad but they are very different things so it's hard to compare.

One is an outright evil policy implemented by a government that knew what it is doing. They other is done by the general population as a result of a policy that was well intentioned but had unintended consequences.

Originally there were two big financial exchanges that accompanied marriage. The bride's family would sell their bride to the groom's family. The bride's family would then give a dowry of roughly twice the bride price to the newly wed couple. Overall this meant that both families would give similar amounts of money to the newly wed couple and there was nothing really wrong with it.

However, some political groups decided that selling women was wrong and campaigned to stop it without trying to change the dowry. The result was that the groom's family was no longer required to make a contribution to the marriage while the bride's family would have to pay double. In poverty stricken countries this meant it was much easier to reproduce by having sons than daughters, so much so that they have sex selective abortions.

Its the economic conditions that make boys preferable in some countries, in america girls are preferable.

A "feminists" favorite weapon is the smoke - screen objection. In this case, the "it causes population disparity". A "feminist" doesn't know any more about population dynamics / fundamentals than a monkey knows about astrophysics, that objection sounds better than the truth though. Gee, here's an idea, why not pressure those governments to pay women to keep girls and tax them to have boys? That will take care of the potentially disastrous effects of "population disparity" which is of course what "feminists" are really concerned about on this issue, right?

Its because they have a baby limit in urban areas, I think it is 2 children per family, otherwise you are fined. Therefore they want males so they can work and be of more use.
