Is 720p a better picture than 1080i?
I had a DirecTV tech out to fix my satellite and he said that 720p resolution is better than 1080i. Is this correct? And, will DirecTV ever offer regular programming in 1080p?

720p is better for fast action like sports. 1080i has better detail (50% more lines). 1080p broadcasting is a bit off because 1080p is a bandwidth hog. Transmitting 1080p means fewer channels which is not what cable and satellite companies want to do . . .
As far as a better picture goes, there is another factor that cable and satellite companies don't want to talk about: compression. Compression is where they remove data so they can fit more channels into their system. Data = detail so less data means less detail. Cable and satellite companies are notorious for heavily compressing the signals. Compare a local station on your satellite system with the same station over the air. OTA will look better because it's not as compressed.

No.

I don't know what DirecTV is, but technology is always evolving, eventually Hi-Definition will be standard.

No it is not. 1080i is 'full HD'. 720p is....not. It'll have a lot to do with your TV, your signal source and the quality of the product. But 1080i is what you're aiming for.
