Today is Labor day Dog Section!?
Woke up at about 6:30 when I heard my dog barking... At a squirrel. I mean, come on, you KNOW you're not supposed to bark at squirrels, hon. Weather forecast? Sunny? Cloudy? Raining? Snowing???? Can't believe summer is over.. And Labor day is here. Today I came across a question, considering the thought of mouse catching. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgOlD... And so that baffled me. Knowing that my dog also loves to catch mice.
Who here allows their dogs to catch, and kill a mouse? I personally do not mind much unless my dog picks it up with his mouth (Yuck..). My dog also loves to go after woodchucks. He barks at them furiously but it is a bit too big to paw on it without getting anything back. So the only thing I do allow him to go after is mice. Would you ever allow your dog to kill a mouse? Why or why not. And have a Happy Labor Day hope everyone stays safe (And WARM!) :)
Bug: A bit harsh on the fellow is he? Ew I would never allow my dog to literally pick up the rodent with his mouth. He actually never does.
UHave2Be: Your dog used to SHAKE the opposum to death? Using her mouth? I personally think it is not a very good idea to allow your dog to pick it up with their mouth. Considering the opposum may be carrying a virus or disease. Training my dog to not go after mice would be quite difficult for I don't mind that much. He doesn't show interest in squirrels though he just looks up at them, shaking the trees. Never runs after them.
Bobbie: No, this isn't bug's question. Pretty different. "Do you ALLOW your dog to catch mice" is the question here. Bug's questions was "Does your dog catch/go after mice" so it is pretty different.

It's like 50 degrees here. WHAT THE HECK! HOW IS NEW YORK WARMER THAN NEBRASKA!? Petsmart trainers? Hmm... I think they are probably better than Petco trainers. I've come to realize that I do not like Petco very much, as all three of the fish I bought there died within two days... and all my fish from Petsmart are still going strong (heck, even the fish that I just couldn't refuse to buy, knowing it would probably die later, from WALMART is still doing A okay). So I don't have the best view of Petco right now. BUT, I don't think the *trainers* at Petsmart are probably all that good either. They may have some helpful tips, but they certainly aren't worth the $90 for ever hour long training session they are asking for, especially when you can come to the dog section, and get the same quality advice, FOR FREE! So, after my rant... yeah, that kind of answers your question in there. Connor, that's *freezing*!? It's 50 degrees here, and that's still considered NICE! Freezing is anything below 30 degrees, and unbearable is anything below 0 (which happens a lot here!). How the heck is Missouri warm and Nebraska isn't! nooottt ffaaiiirrr *whine*

I've been up early since 6:00am too. Oh the joys of dog ownership! We then went for a walk around 9:00 as I needed to get up and do something, it was nice so quiet as everyone was still asleep in their beds more than likely!
My Basset Hound isn't really an avid hunter, nor do I take my dogs hunting. But my BH found a field mouse or whatever you call them and he didn't eat it he just sniffed it..I probably wouldn't have let him eat it since you never know what those vermin are carrying...he was more curious about it than wanting to eat it.
My Labrador Retrievers HAVE killed waterfowl. They have killed red-wing blackbirds and a mallard duck when I have taken them to the sloughs to swim and fetch/retrieve. I let them kill it, they never ate it but flung it around until it was dead...I wasn't exactly going to grab it from their mouths...eww. I will admit I was screaming hysterically and crying because I didn't know what to do as this bird is flailing and squaking...I'm a softie... My one Labrador Retriever actually caught a Robin in flight in the outdoor run we have built for them. Don't know how she achieved that feat. But my Labradors have a high prey drive, ESPECIALLY to anything that has feathers!
They even try to 'attack' a feather duster we have at home lol. If we bring it out, my dogs pupiles get huge and they look all crazed and start panting heavily...so no pet birds for this house!

Woke up at 4:30 AM had to get paperwork ready for a meeting I have today.
Weather much better, has been 105 here the last few days, going to be much cooler- in the 90's.
I live on a horse ranch.
My dogs are not allowed to catch, chase or kill anything.
Period.
I had to really work on my adult Pomeranian , because she has intense prey drive and when I first got her I found that she had killed three baby possums by shaking them to death.
Mind you when I walk around the ranch with the dogs squirrels and rabbits bolt, and that Pomeranian will now not even look at them.
I will have to do the same with the Puppy Pomeranian, but he has no off leash privelages yet so its not an issue.
My ranch has hawks, owls and snakes that are meant to take care of vermin.
My dogs are my pets and I provide them with entertainment and food.
ADD: I never saw her get the possums.
I let her out in my backyard at night, not knowing there WERE young possums.
(At my house in the suburbs not the ranch)
Found the first dead one the next AM actually thought the Collie had done it. I was SO mad at her. Lassie never harms anything.
The next time it happened a few nights later- the Pomeranian came running in and her sides were wet, and she ran and hid. I went outside and found another dead baby possum (Kitten sized)
Then about two days later, I let her out in the morning and again she came tearing in with soaking wet sides. I immediately knew what happened. Went out in the backyard to find a dieing possum who had been shaken so hard his innards had come out of his rectum.
The wet on her side being from said innards smacking the Pom on her side.
I of course apologized to the Collie for ever thinking she would hurt a living thing.
Gave the Pomeranian heck for the Possum massacre.
Started aversion training with her at the ranch when she so much as LOOKED at a small furry creature.
I would never allow the dogs to pick up anything in their mouth that did not come from the kitchen!

It is going to be cool today, great I love cooler weather, can't stand 90 degree weather. Labor day is here so it must be my b-day lol.
Yeah my dogs chase mice, they chase anything that happens to wander into my yard. I have no problems with that as that is what the breed was bred for, and I really don't care what anyone would have to say about that. My one weim ran down a rabbit and yes did kill the rabbit, it was likely sick or hurt anyways as I don't think she would have caught it had it not been. She did not eat it, just ran around like it was her prize. My other weim ate a couple birds that he caught, pretty nasty. The third weim trailed and dug up a mole and tossed out of the yard, she played with it first. My dalmatian used to do that as well, but I think instead of tossing it out of the yard he just killed them (idk it was before I was born).
Would I allow them to kill a mouse? Probably not as they are riddled with disease. But I don't mind them chasing them out of the house and the yard. I love the prey drive they have, as it makes good field dogs.
If my one bulldog thinks a watermelon is a ball (it is round that is all he knows), he probably would think a turtle was one too.

My dog never has killed a mouse. But he does love going after those bunnies. He usually doesn't catch them but he tries super hard every time. So... no my dog doesn't catch mice and I don't think i would let him, yuck.
Well...
Happy Labor day to all the people that will read this.

Isn't this basically Bug/Sun's questions?
My one dog kills mice, picks them up in her mouth and they are gone. Dogs pick up and eat a lot worse than rodents. She is also allowed to kill tree squirrels if she could catch them, but they are too fast, so we bring out the 22. Have killed about 20 of them lately. They are just rodents with bushy tails.
We also have an assortment of prey birds who catch rodents. Have had a red tailed hawk out here, catching gophers out in our meadow.

3 of mine don't care one bit about chasing anything, my beagle will scarf up a mole every now and again but it is not encouraged and if I catch him on time the critter is saved.
I do not "allow them" to kill anything.
My cats are all indoor cats but I had one in the past that brought home a 3 foot live copperhead. After my initial heartache I killed it with a butcher knife and the cat was never allowed outside again.

I would have to say that if she wanted to chase one a little bit I wouldn't do anything to prevent it. She's such a fraidy chicken :) that I couldn't resist watching her enjoy a little game of chase. Though I do know that if that mouse would suddenly stop and turn around my baby would run for the hills. She is such a vicious APBT can't you tell. :) LOL Have a great Labor Day everyone, it's back to work tomorrow.

lol. i never heard something like that! take your dog to the vet!
NOT. take your dog to a specail care specailalist thinggyyy majiggy so it will be put down for harming the poor rats.
NOT. Lol this is my real answer::::::: OK. so my dog never, ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER goes after mice. Only squirrels. He runs after them and tries to climb the trees which I find hilarious. whats wrong with letting them put the mouse in their mouth? they wont die.

My dog doesnt show interest in mice. He's rather chase squirrels up trees, if he could.
