Why are the horses used for polo called ponies? Aren't they horses?

I know the term 'pony' is used for smaller horse breeds, but what about polo ponies? Aren't they large enough to be called horses? Someone want to clarify this for me?

There are many term in horses where ponies are called horses - miniature horses, Arabs and Quarter Horses too are always horses.

The term Polo Pony stems from years ago when they were ponies that were used for the game and although some are bigger, most are fairly small, and if 15 hands they can still be classed as ponies.

hi AJ. are you taking part in Polo now or pondering it? I distinctly propose it. for my area you will under no circumstances discover yet another game with horses plenty relaxing and aggressive as Polo. Wow, Annabanana i did no longer understand that your are a Polo participant. Me too, or least I used to play. i became into taught at a militia college. Their Polo ponies have been a blend. i think of the breed relies upon on whether this is indoor or exterior Polo. I then joined a pair diverse communities and performed section Polo. certainly one of my well known horses I used is my reining horse, with racing blood strains. He became into the least complicated for me and the quickest off the line. I even have seen generally TB for exterior Polo, like Annabanana suggested they have the stamina. In Polo you alter horses commonly so having a string of a mix of breeds would be my advice besides. I even have used many grade horses, quarter horses and TB's. i'm no longer tall so in my opinion i chanced on it much less complicated on horses below sixteen palms. I even have the main important hit and the nearer i'd be to the floor the greater length in the back of my ball. I additionally discover it much less complicated to hook the mallets while my palms at the instant are not scuffling with retaining an prolonged mallet. each and each participant is diverse. you will would desire to play to discover your possibilities. Is there a camp or Polo team on your section with their own horses which you would be able to connect with get a experience for it? i visit vote for Annabanana's answer I only had to joing the communication and upload what i ought to. i'm by no potential a great Polo participant. It looks like Annabanana is a much greater matured participant than myself.

Because it takes time to produce a made pony that loves to play the equestrian sport of polo (so, a polo pony is simply a type or term of horse used in the game of polo). In the United States, Thoroughbred horses are usually bred with Quarter horses to produce polo ponies.

Foxhunter is right, it's just a term that's used. They used to be quite small and still often are. Lots of them here in the US come from South America, and are a rangy mix of breeds, though any breed is appropriate as long as the horse is agile and fast.
