Gain myself back? Can't focus?

Hi, i've just had a "vacation" where I was forced to do everything that's the opposite of me. I had to follow what my cousin always does, which is being impulsive and being distracted. Now I'm back at school, and I can't concentrate. My thoughts feel so impulsive. I used to play chess, and focusing and keeping the game going was second hand nature to me, but now when I study or play chess, impulsive thoughts, such as thoughts about TV shows, music, just appear out of nowhere. I'm very disappointed in this mindset. How do I get out of it? Everytime I remind myself of my old personality, I try being him, but it fails because I doubt these thoughts.

Tough question. I have my own set of "issues" that are rather close to yours.

I used to worry about everything. I was the kind of person that set a strict schedule for myself and always followed it. Always early for business meetings and very dependable. In other words, I never let myself down. I've had a bit of a "vacation" in my own life too. And I have learned to relax and just not fret over the small stuff. It's a wonderful feeling to have so much less stress. HOWEVER, I am feeling that I am letting myself down somewhat. I need to get back to the "old me" just like you do.

My only lame advice for you would be to perhaps associate with others that are successful in their studies and in keeping promises to themselves. Maybe join a chess club. Or, you don't have one, start one. Get together with other like-minded people that are good at academics and are trying to excel in life.

Maybe you could right these thoughts down just to get them out on paper. Then look at them for what they are, they are just experiences that you were apart of and can be changed. Limit the things you watch on tv that are distracting, and make better music choices that relaxes your brain. You have to get your focus back, so you can do the things you really love to do.
