My family suspects a young teenage boy we know is being abused by a firend of this mother. We don't want to involve authorities unless we are fairly certain. How can we tell?

How about talking to his Mother in private and have her get involved. Unless you feel she already knows or does not care. Then I would have a very straight and honest talk with him and see if he wants to involve the authorities. Let it be his choice with your support. And make sure to let him know that perpetrator has the problem not him. He may feel guilty when he should not.

If they find everything sexual (pens, pencils, mushy stuff, balloons.)
