Dedicate a song to labor day?

Most Dangerous Woman in America- Utah Phillips

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6y2St9zfQs

BQ: Why don't our schools teach children the reason for Labor Day? Why is the history of the labor movement in America almost ignored?

Update:

kenrayf- i was thinking it was the opposite- that it is some sort of irrational cold war fear that if you teach kids about unions helping America get out of the robber baron days it would encourage communism.

Well I went to school in one of those crazy east coast liberal states so I got taught about the labor movement in the US and elsewhere in high school. But you're exactly right in your reply to kenrayf. In Texas, Dolores Huerta was removed from the US history standards because she is (gasp) a socialist.

http://tfninsider.org/2010/05/20/texas-sboe-vs-dol... This kind of thinking cannot exist in white christian America. We are the best country in the whole world because of free market capitalism, guns, and Jesus. If you disagree, you are not a real American.

Oh one other thing, the nature of partisan politics is that you cannot ever admit that the other side has contributed anything positive to society ever. The opposite side of the labor movement coin is that the religious aspect of the abolition movement and the early progressive movement is downplayed.

Thumbs up for mentioning U. Utah Phillips buddy!

B.Q. Your additional details hit the nail on the head. While communist involvement in the labor movement is a fact, so is it also a fact that there would never have been an American middle class without that involvement. To be fair, most of the big unions went from being part of the solution to part of the problem> Bloated benefits, untenable wages, corruption, ties to organized crime-all led to a system that in many ways is as bad as the unfair status quo it replaced.

For $90 I can meet Ray Davies when he plays a show near me. I'm trying to save up the money :-) I'm not sure what my favorite song is but my current favorite albums are Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) and Something Else By The Kinks.

Oh wait, not that kind of labor?

BA: Are you kidding, ask a kid when WWII was or when was the Great Depression? History is not taught well in school. Hell, even when talking about George Washington the curriculum focuses on the fact he was a slave owner, white, and rich over anything else he did.

BQ - I don't think it's totally ignored. It's been a while since I've been in school but I remember talking about it some in History class and reading books like The Jungle in English.

BA: It should be taught. There are so many things I wish the schools would teach children. How about some things they can use in later life, like how to prepare a simple tax return?

BQ: Very good question, children should be taught that when they are working and paying taxes, they have a right to organize themselves as a union and protect their rights as workers - especially in these times with such a corrupt government.

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime," lyrics by Yip Harburg, music by Jay Gorney (1931)

They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,

When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.

They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,

Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.

Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

    Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;

Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,

Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,

Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,

And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.

Why don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,

Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,

Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,

And I was the kid with the drum!

Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.

Say, don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?
