Print Cartridges with a "Counting Chip"?

I tried to have my HP 920 and Lexmark 36 cartridge refilled. They tell me there is an embedded chip which deactivates the ink flow after a preset number of characters. Does anyone know how to reset or disable this device?

HP printers can be reset but I haven't tried a Lexmark. See my sources for a page devoted to HP refills.

I remember someone saying there was something you could do to fool it into thinking any refilled cartridge is fresh.

I'll come back and post if I find where that was..
