    By the rules of logs, log(a) + log(b) = log(ab)

    log(x+5) = log(x-1) + log(x+1)

    log(x+5) = log(x-1)(x+1)

    x + 5 = (x - 1)(x + 1)

    x + 5 = x^2 - 1

    x^2 - x - 6 = 0

    (x - 3)(x + 2) = 0

    x = 3, -2

    x = -2 is an extraneous solution

    x = 3 is the answer
