Should I upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium?
I've bought a Dell netbook (it is being delivered this week) which comes with Windows 7 Starter. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium (I can get this for £56.38 with free delivery from Amazon).
I will be using the netbook for using the internet and emails , using Microsoft Office (mostly Word and Excel - I am an Open University student), and watching DVDs and listening to CDs of audio material for my OU course while commuting to work on the bus as I have a 1hr 15minute journey each way (I have read some information online that suggests that this might be a problem with Windows 7 starter?).
I'm not sure if it's worth the money to upgrade - I would be grateful for some advice! Obviously I don't want to spend £57 if I don't need to :-)
Oh, and I have also read that I can't change my desktop background on Windows 7 Starter either - rubbish..... :-(
Hi Shaun, the amazon upgrade is a on a disk, the netbook doesn't have a disk drive but I can get hold of an external optical drive from a family member. Also I understand I can upgrade via the netbook without the need for a disk, but I can't seem to find details about the cost of this? Can anyone help with this also (I am in the UK)

If money is tight, you can do fine with Starter on a netbook for most basic things, but you'll want to upgrade to Home Premium for things like changing the desktop background. It also supposedly doesn't allow things like DVD playback / the media center, but I'm not sure if there are ready workarounds to that or not.
And no, the Amazon upgrade isn't on a disc, since it's an "Anytime Upgrade." You just input a new serial number and it quickly upgrades everything to Home Premium, since the features are technically already installed, but just not unlocked. You don't need a drive or anything.

If you're not missing anything from other editions of Windows 7, then perhaps it's not worth spending money on. This is especially true as some of the add on things that used to make the difference between editions are now part of Windows Essentials and I believe can be installed anywhere.
The simplest way to upgrade edition I believe is to use the built in Windows Anytime Upgrade tool. I was unable to see how it worked because all my machines appear to have either Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise installed.

Is the Windows 7 on Amazon a CD/ disc? Bear in mind that many netbooks lack a disc drive. As you're going to mainly be doing simple things the only reason I can really see for upgrading is for the ability to change the background (not really worth it).
