Would it be offensive to build a Christian church near Ground Zero?

Opponents of the "Ground Zero Mosque" have clearly taken the actions of a few extremists to be indicative of all of the followers of Islam. Some people, though, might find it just as easy to take these actions as indicative of religious people in general. I mean, if we're gonna lump a whole bunch of people together, why stop at Islam? Isn't belief in an invisible sky god and submission to written dogma the same no matter which text we're buying into? Why is building a mosque more offensive?

No it is not offensive, and neither is a Muslim center or Hindu or Buddhist center.

The only way I might be critical of it is if the people that planned the terrorist attacks funded it or had anything to do with it. And I would have an issue if they did this anywhere in the country.

Building a mosque is more offensive because the people who crashed a plane into the World Trade Center were of the Islamic religion. They were Muslims. So it's considered offensive by most people for a mosque to be built near Ground Zero.

Some Islamic people say they want the mosque there to "unite everyone", but really is the mosque is built I think some crazy New Yorker is going to go blow it up. It'll just cause problems. And I really don't think it will ever unite anyone. They can build the mosque anywhere in New York. They just choose to build it near Ground Zero. It doesn't make any sense. They should build it someplace else.

Not nearly as offensive as an Islamic center. Christians did not crash planes into the towers. Muslims did. Like it or not, Ground Zero is associated with one of the greatest jihadist attrocities in world history.

The question I have to ask is this: which Islam is the "real" Islam? Is it the peace-loving Islam, or is it the political Islam that issues death threats, incites riots, and stones and/or flogs women? Which one is really the fringe here. Both sides are saying the other is out of line, so who do we believe?

If Islam is really as reasonable and tolerant as we are led to believe by the Neville Chamberlain school of interfaith relations, then the next time somene draws a cartoon of Muhammed, we can just explain it to the rioting Muslims. We can hold out the olive branch of tolerance. I'm sure they'll understand. They certainly understood regarding Theo van Gogh.

But on the whole, GZ is forever linked with jihadist attrocity. That's what makes the center so distasteful.

Muslims usually build mosques on a religious or important sites after an important victory (thinking the destruction of the Pentagon and thousands of human lives?) and make it a "religious" site. Why in the world do we need build a mosque five blocks from Ground Zero, when there is fifty-some mosques in the same city?!? Whether you believe God or not, you can't say that 911 wasn't started by Muslim extremists. I was forty-five minutes away from the Pentagon, and I can tell you I heard my classmates cry because they lost their parents.

A greek Orthodox church was destroyed on 9/11 when a tower caved in on it. They were not allowed to rebuild. yet everybody is screaming to have the Moslem center/school/ gym, etc built. We should decide if that Christian Church was offensive. If so then shouldn't the Moslem complex be the same.

Why should the Muslims be allowed to build any more mosques in NY?

In Iran, Iraq and other Muslim countries Christians can turn up at their church and find it locked and barred and eventually discover that their pastor has been arrested and is in jail on a capital charge.

You are completely sidestepping the issues. It's not a mosque. It's not about religion. The money to build it has clear ties to terrorists.

It's amazing that this country still survives when all a terrorist needs is a religious mask and then we let them in.

Because politicians with no ideas or solutions want to get elected and creating "issues" like the "Ground Zero Mosque" is the only way they can inflame passions and get people to elect them.

It's offensive to build Christian churches directly on top of the land stolen from Native Americans.
